Signature of Referee___________________________________________________________ Date__________________________________________________________________ ANNEXURE B 5 YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT COURSE The Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust (YETT) is a youth networking organization committed to the full participation of young people in sustainable development through advocacy and capacity building of youth organizations in Zimbabwe. Development of a capable youth leadership is crucial if this mandate is to be met. YETT aims to facilitate empowerment of the young men and women with leadership and coping skills in order to equip them to become future leaders in their communities. The Youth Leadership Development Course (Winter School) is a national programme designed to empower young people as positive agents of social change contributing to visionary leadership within youths at the same time confronting issues of peace building, youth participation in national discourse, youth skills development and conflict transformation. The Youth Leadership Development Program’s mandate is to also to raise youth’s awareness of gender and leadership in their spheres of influence. Objectives of the Youth Leadership Development Course 1.To develop a framework for visionary leadership at the same time confronting issues of peace building, youth participation in national discourse, youth skills development and conflict transformation. 2.To enhance the youth to become the leading light and pioneers of positive social change within their communities 3.To develop participation of young women in leadership processes and create an enabling environment for learning, networking and exchange of ideas 4.To define a role for the youth today and assist addressing their aspirations, desires and expectations. Target group and Selection 35 young women and men will be selected from all over Zimbabwe between the ages of 1925.The training programme will balance the needs of the diverse group of young people including out of school, disabled youth, rural and urban youth, youths from civil society, religious organizations and youths in tertiary institutions. YETT will consider applicants who in their 6 applications are able to 1.Identify and social problem affecting young people in Zimbabwe 2.document a solution that will help alleviate the problem. Applicants are expected to submit applications of high calibre in terms of potential for leadership. Successful applicants will be notified by email,post or phone call, therefore applicants are advised to give the correct and updated contact details. An invitation letter will be sent out, containing additional information on the workshop program and practical arrangements to successful applicants. Profile of Participants Youths aged between 19 and 25 years Youths who have never attended the YET Winter School before (2005 to 2012). Topics to be covered The programme will focus on issues of peace building, youth participation in national discourse, youth skills development and conflict transformation. Below are the key topics to be covered: Leadership, strategic thinking and confidence Building Gender, sexuality, HIV and AIDS for transformation Use of ICTS and Social Media Conflict Transformation and Peace Building Youth Politics and Leadership Workshop Approach The winter school will be a 2-week residence programme in Harare and the methodological approach will focus on. • Team building, will be the initial introduction to the Leadership programme .The alumni will be exposed to the key thematic topics of the training through a team building exercise, which will set the tone of the whole leadership programme. The team building exercise will directly lead to the below approach • Initiating problem-solving projects, for youth to identify a social problem-affecting young people in Zimbabwe and carry out project assignments to address the problem. The problem solving projects should also seek to promote issues of Gender and HIV/AIDS. • Strategic outreach to under-represented youth, providing them with crucial tools such as Social media training and literacy, communication skills, practical touring of projects to enhance project management skills. 7 • Engaging emerging leaders and local government in key national development issues governance, youth participation in national discourse and entrepreneurship. • Buildings strong networks of alumni through the above-mentioned approaches, the alumni will be constantly given tasks were they will identify with their strengths. Certification will serve as network reinforcement through personalized awards capturing the most significant memories of one another. The winter school will also borrow diary sessions from similar programmes where the alumni will be able to express on camera their winter school experience. Date and Place 18th – 31St of July 2014 in Harare. More logistics and the venue will be advised in due course. Cost of Participation YETT will pay for accommodation and food for the workshop. Participants will have shared accommodation. Travel costs to and from the workshop will be covered by YETT. Personal expenses are not included. 8
