Mounfield 104p BFX 420KG 22 mo D.P. Mounfield Consumer Purchase Information Sourced from: AHDB/EBLEX/LAA/IASS The traditional pattern for January and early February would be for some easing of prices as consumer demand is subdued with budgets tighter following the holiday period. As such, any upwards pressure on prices might be limited for a period. However the fundamentally tight supply situation continues which, should demand improve, has the potential to result in some resumption of the upwards trend later in the year. Reduced purchases of roasting and mince impacts on beef’s performance According to the latest Kantar Wordpanel data, in the four weeks to 8 December, household purchases of beef declined 4% on the year. However, despite this, overall expenditure on beef demonstrated some growth. As a direct result of a continued rise in average prices, the value of sales increased 5% on the year to £186 million. Household purchases of beef roasting joints were back 5% on the same period last year, largely on the back of an overall decline in the number of households buying them. Within the category, there was some growth in volume purchases by retired households but the fall in purchases by younger households more than offset this. Sales of beef roasting joints have been hampered by shoppers looking for cheaper alternative protein sources, with some switching to pork and chicken. There was also a 5% reduction in beef mince purchases, largely on the back of fewer households buying mince compared to last year. However, consumers also bought less mince on each shopping trip, a development likely to have been influenced by the 13% increase in the average price paid. STORE CATTLE Every Friday (To commence after the sale of the beef approximately 12.30pm) Prices Peaked at £1,100 or 196.0p 51 Numbers picking up as we move in to the 2nd week of January more are required and are expected in the next few months. 27month old Red Hereford Steers topped at £1100, 23mo Black Hereford steers topped at £980 both from Messrs H & A M Willett. Mr J C Evans sold his Simmentals to £1030 better than the beef trade in comparison. Therefore if you present your cattle as farm assured when they are not this is a misdescription and you are representing your cattle fraudulently. When the animal gets to the abattoir they have specific outlets for these animals and often don’t for nonfarm assured stock so they deduct massively. This is due to the time and loss of animal to the batch that was bought for a specific job. They cannot be returned from an abattoir therefore you are in their hands. The deduction could be £150. Tests and Cross Compliance Reductions With effect from 1st January 2014, DEFRA is strengthening the financial penalties to be applied on Farmers who have overdue surveillance or “check” T.B. Tests. The R.P.A. will then apply a cross compliance reduction to the affected farmer’s CAP Scheme (SPS and Rural Development) payments. The severity of reduction applied will depend on how long the T.B. Test is overdue. In general, the following will apply:- T.B. Test overdue by 1-10 days – 1% Reduction. - 11-30 days – 3% Reduction. - More than 30 days – 5% Reduction If however the cross compliance breach is felt to have been caused intentionally, more severe reductions may be applied. Wright Manley Beeston Castle Auction Tel: 01829 262 132 8 Don’t get caught out by slurry Compliance Laws Up to 50% of Livestock producers in Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) could still be non-compliant with slurry storage requirements brought into force last year, according to the Environment Agency. As of 1st January 2012, cattle producers were required to have five months’ storage and pig producers, six. “Time is ticking and the longer you leave it, the more likely you will get caught”. Failure to comply is a criminal offence and could result in reductions in Single Farm Payment as well as prosecution and a fine, which could be as much as £10,000 in a Magistrates Court. “In some cases there may be ways to reduce the amount of slurry produced – by limiting the amount of rainwater entering the slurry store, for example. However in a lot of cases, investing in storage may be the only option.” The first step is to assess how much slurry is being produced over the storage period and how much is dirty water. Dirty water can be spread during the closed period, whereas slurry cannot, so separating off this water can save on storage requirements. As soon as water runs into slurry it is classed as slurry and cannot be spread. Ways to reduce slurry storage requirements include: * Put drains in to allow dirty water to be segregated. * Consider putting a roof over the collecting yard. * Fix guttering to stop water entering slurry systems. * Reducing stock numbers, or using straw yards as muck will be classed as F.Y.M. which can be spread during the closed period.
