inspiration in action The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is seeking a qualified Slovak national for the following volunteer position: Post Title: Programme Officer, Human Rights & Civic Education Host Agency: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya Language: Excellent command of English, both written & spoken Duration: Two years Application Deadline: 19 February 2010 (only Slovak nationals may apply) Description of Duties: Work closely with the Assistant Resident Representative (ARR) in managing the Human Rights and Civic Education Programme of the Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP). Ensure that gender is adequately integrated and mainstreamed in the programme Ensure that disability issues are mainstreamed in UNDP’s programmes Apply Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA) to support the development and implementation of the Empowerment component of the CPAP specifically in the area of human rights and civic education ; Liaise and maintain close working relationship with key stakeholders towards the efficient and effective implementation of the programme activities ; Results based programme management, including design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of projects with various CSO’s; Coordinate and liaise with development partners; Support to strengthen the coordination and networks of human rights sector CSO’s; Participate in the country office resource mobilization initiatives; Monitoring and evaluation of the Programme; Take active part in meetings and other relevant fora related to the programme; Prepare project documents , progress reports and other project related reports and documents; Coordinate joint evaluations and reviews of the various human rights and civic education projects; Attend relevant meetings of the Human Rights sector, and brief the ARR, Unit members and development partners as appropriate; Follow up on the recommendations arising from partnerships in course of the implementation of the Country Programme Action Plan; Undertake other duties as may be assigned by the Resident Representative, Country Director and ARR relevant to the Country Programme Furthermore, UNV volunteers are encouraged to: Strengthening their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day (IVD); Getting acquainted with and building on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; Reflecting on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; Contributing articles/write-ups on field experiences and submitting them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; Assisting with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UNV volunteers; Promoting or advising local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encouraging relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible. Qualifications & Skills A Masters Degree in Law, Gender and Development, Political Science, Human Rights, Social Sciences, International Relations, Development studies or other relevant area Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in the area of human rights and civic education Sound knowledge of and experience in management and implementation of development programmes in the area of governance, law, gender and development, and human rights; Expertise in mainstreaming disabilities is an added advantage Experience in results based planning and financial management; Experience in HRBA to programming; Additional qualification in programme/project management is an added advantage; Good experience in monitoring and evaluation of programmes/projects Good strategic thinking, together with strong analytical skills; Excellent communication skills. Ability to work with minimum supervision and in a multicultural setting; Experience working with the UN or an International development organization or donor agency is an added advantage; Computer proficiency.
