CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Pre-Seminar Herding Dog Demonstration: Terry Parker, Parker Gourmet Goats, and her best helper
Jeri (herding dog extraordinaire) will provide a herding dog demonstration in the Bloom Pavilion Arena.
Terry and Jeri will show you just how much help a good herding dog can be in managing an unruly group of
goats. They work together daily and the presentation will be both educational and entertaining.
Sign in early for the seminars so you don't miss seeing Terry and Jeri at work!
FAMACHA: Are your goats afflicted with the Barber Pole worm? Come and learn FAMACHA, a technique
for evaluating which goats need to be treated for this anemia-causing parasite. This technique reduces the use
of dewormers, decreases the development of parasite dewormer resistance and helps keep your herd healthy.
FAMACHA cards will be available to purchase at an additional cost of ($12). Susan will also provide fecal
analysis information. Bring a sample of fresh manure from animals that haven’t been dewormed in at
least two months. (Instructor: Susan Kerr, DVM. Dr. Kerr gives presentations throughout the northwest on
small ruminant parasite control and other livestock health topics).
Blood Draws - BYOGG (Bring your own gentle goat): Do you want to learn how to draw blood on
your own goat? Richard and Sandy, Richard and Sandy's Boer Goat Farm, will show you how they do their
own blood draws. A mailing box, packing material, paperwork, blood sample tube, syringe and needle will
be provided for sending samples for CAE, CL to WSU and pregnancy testing to BioPryn.
The class will start in the back room of the Colockum building where you will gather the supplies you need to
draw your own blood sample and send it for processing. The participants will then move to the arena to
watch a live demonstration, and if they prefer, gain hands on experience with their own goats. You will be
responsible for your own goat. You will not have the opportunity to practice on Richard and Sandy's goat
and Richard and Sandy will not draw blood for you from your goat.
This is not the time to bring out your biggest, meanest, wildest animal. You will have better luck if you bring
a gentle animal to practice with. Save money and time by learning to draw blood and send in your own
samples!
Chaffhaye: Ever wonder how much you would save if your goats didn't use all the expensive hay for
bedding! Well at the April Fools weekend, Kimber Davies will have a free drawing for 10 bags of
Chaffhaye! Kimber will introduce you to Chaffhaye forage products, share important nutritional information,
and answer the most frequently-asked questions about Chaffhaye, the ultimate all-natural forage product on
the market. She will give you a better understanding of your animal’s nutritional needs, as well as complete
information about Chaffhaye forage products. She is committed to providing you with information you need
to make the best nutritional choices for your animal. So, welcome to Chaffhaye!
Kidding 911 and tubing: Unsure of when you need to step in to assist your doe in labor? Not sure of the
signs of something wrong, when you can help, or when to call the vet? Dr. Cary Heyward, DVM, Lynx
Hollow Boer Goat Farm, will lead a guided discussion on kidding. Kidding is usually a smooth natural
process, but when something goes wrong, it can get bad in a hurry. Problems can be created by inappropriate
intervention, as well as not helping the doe when she needs it. Some of this takes the “feel” that comes with
experience, but this seminar will give you some guidelines to help when you’re out with a doe in labor and
you’re not sure what needs to be done. How to tube a kid will also be demonstrated. If you haven’t had a
chance to see Dr. Heyward bring kidding to life in her descriptions and advice, this is a class not to be missed.
Several people have given us feedback that they used information from this class to save their kids and doe in
tough kidding situations.
Bottle Babies: Want to know everything about bottle babies? Leslie Bader-Robinson, Leaning Tree Boer
Goat Farm, has vast experience with raising bottle babies from dams who produce quads, aged dams who
need help raising triplets, and other situations.
She will walk you through basic bottle baby selection (when to interfere with Mother Nature?), initial care,
preventative care, her vaccination protocol to prevent losses to clostridium, and what to do in some truly
difficult situations. Keep your bottle babies growing as well or better than their dam-raised siblings!.
Handouts provided, and discussions encouraged!
Boer Goat Structure: Ever wonder why those ABGA Breed Standards are there and what they mean?
ABGA Judge, Shelby Armstrong, Dash Acres Boer Goats, will help you understand. Why do we care if they
stand square, what are posty or bandy legs, what is a good top line, what do loose shoulders or sharp withers
look like, why do I care if the shoulders blend smoothly - and what does that mean anyway? Shelby will shed
light on what those judges are talking about when they line up the animals at the end of a class. She will help
you understand goat structure and why it is important to your breeding program.
Meat Goat Management - the whole scoop: Do you want to learn everything you can learn about
market animals? Patti Gylling, Lookout Mountain Boers, is a USBGA Judge with long term 4-H experience.
She will show you how to pick a great market wether. You can use this information during the April Fools
Market Animal sale!
Patti will explain how to care for and condition your wether to help you raise a champion for the show ring.
Without proper care, even the best show wether will not perform well. To complete the seminar, Patti will
demonstrate how to clip and show like a champion. All this will help you choose, condition and show the
wether you might purchase at the April Fools Market Sale.
Hoof Trimming - BYOG (Bring your own goat): Do you want to know how to trim your goats feet so
they stand their best? Then attend this seminar and have Terry help you learn to trim your own goat's hooves.
Terry Brown, Capriole Boer Goats, Region 1 ABGA Director, needs no introduction. Terry's years of
experience and success in the show ring tell their own story.
Bring your problem goat to the ring along with your own stand and tools for hands-on instruction. Terry will
explain what she has learned on hoof trimming using the clippers and grinder. She will share the way she
trims animals and show some corrective techniques.
Recommended tools: SHARP hoof nippers. (Terry prefers the orange handle ones). 4” or 4 ½” angle grinder
with handle attached, and coarse sanding disc (36 grit). GLOVES.
Trimming and Fitting Your Show Goat: Not sure where to start preparing your goat for show?
Maddie and Crystal Fenton of Dust Devil Ranch are experts in the field of trimming and showing. They have
successfully shown at the ABGA and JABGA National Shows. Maddie owns a trimming and showing service
and offers her expertise at Boer goat shows.
Maddie and Crystal will show you how to trim. They’ll show how to make your goat look meatier, more
correct, elegant, have more breed character and all around look better.
Participants will learn how to fit and trim a goat from the basic trim around the tail and hooves, all the way to
some more advanced techniques.
Showmanship (BYOG): Want to really stand out in the class to help your goat looks its best?
Alyse Armstrong, Dash Acres Boer Goats, is attending college in Moscow, Idaho. She has years of
experience in raising and showing Boer goats. Her presence and skill in the show ring are well known and
well respected. In addition to showing, she now judges and provides seminars.
Alyse will provide detailed instructions and educational hand outs for the class. She will narrate and direct
while Sheridan and Ben demonstrate the art of showmanship.
Sheridan Lantz, Rising Moon Boer Goats and JABGA Board Member and Secretary, and Ben Fredrickson,
JABGA Board Member, will demonstrate their showmanship skills as well as some intermediate tips and
maneuvers. Sheridan has been around goats since she was an infant and has been showing dairy goats for
years. Sheridan and Ben show against each other in local shows. Sheridan has won the Round Robin class at
Puyallup for two years running with Ben right behind her in 2012. Ben was the Champion 2012 Boer
Showman at Puyallup with Sheridan right behind him. At Thurston County Fair in 2011, Sheridan had the
Champion Market wether with Ben in Reserve; in 2012 the placings were reversed.
If you’ve wondered where to stand, how to set up your goat, which direction to walk, how to move your goat
out of the line, do a head-to-tail or side-by-side, or even how to do a key-hole maneuver, come to this
seminar.
If you would like hands-on experience, bring your own goat.

Champion Market Goat
Pen Sale
Saturday April 20th, 2013 at 12 Noon
Kittitas Valley Event Center Bloom Pavilion
Ellensburg, Washington
GOAL: The goal of the sale is to provide high quality market animals for youth in the Northwest to show at their
respective county fairs.
1) Market animals should be born December - February (some late Nov and early March are acceptable). We would
like to end up with about 100 total animals consigned to the sale. Wethers and non-breeding-quality females are
eligible. Intact males over 10 weeks old are not allowed. There is no consignment fee, but it is to be understood that
animals are NOT guaranteed to sell. ….
2) Market animal should be at least 50% Boer, must be disbudded, and should be on high quality feed. Animals may
be weaned or still on their mothers. For animal 8-11 weeks, the buyer and seller can determine whether the animal
is ready to wean. For animals less than 8 weeks, arrangements for pick-up/delivery will have to be made between
buyer and seller.
3) Animals will be consigned on a first come first serve basis with approximately twenty-five December, fifty January
and twenty-five February places available. Please do not consign an animal to the sale if you intend to offer it for
sale off the farm prior to the sale. If a consignment animal becomes ill prior to the sale, please contact us to
determine if a substitution is possible.
4) Each farm is allowed to consign up to a maximum of 8 animals. If quota of animals is not met, the deadline for
consigning and the number of goats per farm may be extended...
5) Breeders consigning animals are eligible for the 2013 Champion Breeders Cup. Two points will be awarded for
each sale goat receiving grand champion in the buyers Home County, and 1 point per reserve champion. The
animal must still be owned by the original April Fools buyer and the placing must be in the child’s pre-designated
home county.
6) All animals must be accompanied with a Health Record for the buyer to use in their record books (sellers - please
use the Health Record form and the bill of sale form that are downloadable from the Cascade Boer Goat
Association website http://www.cascadebga.org/id8.html).
7) All animals 12 weeks or older must be vaccinated (2 times) with CDT or equivalent. Younger animals must have
been vaccinated at least once. Use of Covexin 8 is discouraged as it can cause significant injection site abscesses.
8) All animals will be weighed in & vet checked as they are unloaded. They must not have any sign of infection at the
banding / castration site, or be showing signs of extreme stress from a recent banding / castration procedure. The
deadline for weigh in is Saturday morning at 8:00am. All sale animals must have a scrapie tag in their ear. Please
fill out all requested information on the consignment slip so data can be posted on the CBGA web site and at the
sale.
9) Owners are responsible for collecting the sale fee and buyer info sheet from the buyer. Each buyer will receive
receipt and COOL form. No money will exchange hands through the CBGA.
10) All animals purchased through the AF sale will be eligible (and encouraged!) for entry into the Saturday
afternoon Prospect Wether Jackpot Classes. Entry fee for that class is only $5 for all goats entered, and cash
Jackpot prizes are offered (please see the class description for full information).

Description
Light Weight Wethers
Medium Weight Wethers
Heavy Weight Wethers
April Fools Prospect Wether Jackpot Classes are YOUTH-oriented classes that will be
held between the ABGA Open Show Percentage Does & Fullblood/Purebred Does on Saturday. The Jackpot is
scheduled to allow youth enough time to purchase and show their wether on Saturday, without having to stay
late if the Open show runs into the early evening. We also encourage youth to bring their wethers from home to
compete in this Jackpot! This Jackpot is for exhibitors under 18 years of age who own the wether(s) shown.
All the wethers entered in the Jackpot must still have all of their “milk teeth”. Please note: although we use
the term “wether” to describe these classes, doelings may be shown, although doelings may not be shown in
both the Open Show and a Prospect Wether Jackpot class.
If you pre-enter your wether(s), please indicate PW (for Prospect Wether) on the entry form; we will assign a
weight class to him on Saturday. Show staff will weigh & record each wether’s weight prior to the Jackpot
classes to determine which of the 3 weight classes your wether(s) will fit into, based on the weights of ALL the
entries. Your wether’s weight class will be assigned after ALL wethers are weighed in. Entering wethers into
the Jackpot classes will be encouraged until shortly before the Jackpot classes begin on Saturday. There
will be ample time for youth to purchase & enter their wethers in the Jackpot classes, as well as enter
their “from home” wethers.
Our announcer will begin to call the Prospect Wether Jackpot class entries to ringside towards the end of the
Percentage Doe show, to give youth plenty of time to have their wethers ready for entry into the ring for the
Jackpot classes!
How the “Jackpot” works: Each wether entered requires a modest $5 entry fee. Half ($2.50) of each entry
fee goes into the Jackpot fund. The CBGA adds $100 to the Jackpot fund, and we are seeking & receiving
donations from other sources, as well. Whatever the total Jackpot fund is on 4/20/13 will be divided based upon
the number of entries in each of the 3 classes; light, medium & heavy. At the end of each class the Jackpot for
that class will be paid out as listed in the table (below), and then the 1st & 2nd place wethers from each of the 3
weight classes will enter the ring to compete for Champion & Reserve Champion Prospect Wether, and
additional Jackpot payouts! Every Jackpot exhibitor will win something, and we hope that you’ll join us!
