Research Program - Measurement and simulation of soil water distribution in field conditions and design of
monitoring systems. Determination of local and regional scale evapotranspiration and crop water use.
Applications of remotely sensed data and geostatistical analysis to water resources evaluation and hydrologic
balance modeling. Measurement of diurnal radiation and energy balance over land surfaces and longer term
hydrologic balance based on soil water monitoring.
Academic Program - Senior and graduate level courses in design of irrigation and drainage systems and water
distribution systems. Graduate courses in physical hydrology, advanced concepts in hydrologic analysis, regional
hydrologic modeling, open channel hydraulics and sediment transport.

NRCS – Sprague River Basin – Evaluate evapotranspiration component of Danish Hydraulics Institute MIKE-SHE
hydrologic simulation model using multinational lysimeter databases (Córdoba and Zaragoza, Spain; Kimberly,
Idaho) and Bowen ratio station data from irrigated and unirrigated pasture in the adjacent Wood River basin.
Make recommendations for ET algorithm modifications to evaluate water balance changes due to alteration of
vegetation distribution and irrigation management in the Sprague River basin. 2005 - 2007
JPL – NASA - Project to develop prototype dual-frequency dual-polarity radar for characterization and penetration of
vegetation and soil profile to 1 m depth below soil surface for remote sensing of soil moisture content from
satellite platform. Project builds on participation in NASA Side-Aperature Radar (SAR) Space Shuttle mission
deployed during BOREAS (BOReal Ecological Atmospheric System) Experiment conducted in Saskatchewan
and Manitoba provinces, Canada. Responsible for in situ soil moisture measurements and data analysis for
radar calibration. 2002 – 2005
IHOP (International H2O Project) 2002 – Project aimed at improved estimates of atmospheric humidity and
precipitation by simultaneous measurement of soil moisture, atmospheric humidity and heat fluxes, atmospheric
boundary layer profiles and precipitation using (NEXRAD) radars. Project coordinated by National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to include land and aircraft-based measurements. Responsible for in situ soil
moisture and soil hydraulic property instrument design and data analysis. 2002 – present
