7. CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FIELD OF GYNAECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY:
I.
Original research work:

1.
First Indian Gynaecologist to have done 15,000 serial
colposcopic examinations in the lower female genital tract in
India, and, established coloposcopic assessment of abnormal
smears (The lancet, 1991; The Journal of Obst. & Gynecology of
India, 1989 & IJMR, 1983).
2.
First Indian Gynaecologist of perform LASER surgery in lower
female genital tract lesions, including benign cervical lesions with
inflammatory smears, and precancerous lesions of uterine cervix
(Journal of Obst. & Gynaecology of India, 1992).
3.
Evolved an alternative strategy (cost effective and feasible in
Indian situation) for early detection of cervical cancer through visual
inspection. (Work published in BMJ, 1992 & the Lancet 19991).
This strategy has been accepted by W.H.O. for the developing
countries (World Health Forum Vol.13, 1992, P-260) & by the Govt.
of India at a W.H.O. Seminar held at Calcutta Feb.3-5, 1993. The
work was further appreciated at the XVI International Cancer
Conference held from 30th October to 5th November, 1994 at New
Delhi.
Invited personally by Dr. J. Stjernsward as W.H.O.
Consultant on control of cervical cancer in developing countries,
meeting held at Hotel Raj Hans, Suraj Kund, New Delhi on 6-7th
November, 1994.

Prepared EFC memorandum to develop clinical base for Institute of
Cytology and Preventive Oncology at NOIDA with major
components:- I) Early detection Lab/Clinics. Ii)Providing

Investigator in the Project "Development of improved version
of Magnivisualizer: funded by Department of Science &
Technology)

Participated as an independent clinical investigator in Uterine
Cervical Dysplasia I study from ‘83-’87. Undertook clinical,
cytologic and colposcopic screening of 1,20,000 women from six
major hospitals of New Delhi. Raised a cohort of 1000 women with
different grades of dysplasia and 1000 women with age and parity
matched controls. Followed up, and, monitored at 3 monthly
intervals till the end point of the study. The precancerous lesions
were treated using double freeze Cryo technique and Laser
vaporisation.

Formulated monitored, and executed Uterine Cervical Dysplasia
II study.
1,00,000 women were screened from eight major
hospitals of New Delhi. A cohort of 100 dysplasias, with, double
the number of controls, have been recruited for a long term follow
up.

Work on Primary Prevention aspects: Studying risk factors
associated with Cervical Cancer. A case control study has been
launched since ’88.
13.
Worked as co-investigator for the community control of cervical
cancer from ‘85-’93 at Alipur PHC, Delhi.

Nominated as a Member of the Steering Committee, by the
Director General – Indian Council of Medical Research, for an IndoUK project on Chlamydia, undertaken jointly by I.C.M.R. and R. P.

Organized 12 camps for early detection of cervical cancer in
various urban slums, rural areas of Delhi, and Tihar Ashram
Complex, New Delhi.

Working on Reproductive Tract Infections (RTI’s) since ’83, and,
trying to establish its etiological association with Cancer Cervix.
Hospital based study (Gynae OPD, Family Planning & STD clinic),
community based (Dabri Slum), as well as, in commercial sex
workers of Red light areas of Delhi, were undertaken in
collaboration with Deptt. of PSM, Maulana Azad Medical College,
New Delhi, as a primary prevention measure to control cervical
cancer. Defined new clinical syndromes on the basis of clinical
presentations seen in our study (Obst. And Gynaecol Vol. 85: 215219, 1995)
