Welcome!
On behalf of Local Organizing Committee (LOC), I would like to
welcome you to the 16th Congress of Asia and Pacific Division of
International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research (IAHR) and
the 3rd IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures.
The conference is organized by Hohai University and co-organized by
the Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute.
The conference and its series of topics were designed to help meet the
challenges of the human demand on water resources and to allow us to play a
vital role in the process of developing solutions to these challenges.
The main theme of the congress / symposium is: "Water and Humanity
— Friendship, Harmony and Sustainable Development".

c. Hydraulic machinery
d. Environmental and ecological impact of hydraulic structures
In addition to these topics, there are also two forums. One is entitled as
“Resettlement and Social Aspects”. The other is entitled “The Impact of the
Wenchuan Earthquake”. After the devastating “Wenchuan Earthquake” in
May, several researchers strongly suggested we hold a forum to discuss the
influences of the earthquake. Thus, this latter forum will focus on the impacts
earthquakes have on water resources, the environment, ecology, and so on.
This year we have had one of the strongest responses to the congress /
symposium. A total of 450 papers were received. After rigorously reviewing
all of the submissions, 392 papers from 25 countries and regions were
6
ultimately accepted. About 86.72 % of the published papers are from Asia,
7.91 % from Europe, 2.81 % from South America, 2.04 % from Australia and
New Zealand, 0.26 % from North America, and 0.26 % from Africa. Most of
the papers’ authors will introduce their results either by oral or poster
presentation during this week’s conference.
I hope that this conference will provide you, delegates from all over the
world, with an open forum to exchange your research, results, and new
information and ideas in the fields related to hydro-environment.

Tiexinqiao Water Experiment Center
The Tiexinqiao Water Experiment Center of NHRI, with a total area
of 265,000 m2, is located on the south bank of the New Qinhuai
River and is 15 km away from downtown. It features more than 20
large-scale testing halls, including: a hall for testing the backwater
zone and dam site for the Three Gorges Project, Testing Halls of
Hydropower, Sedimentation, Navigation, Coastal Engineering and
Estuary Training, and the Testing Halls for the New Yongding River,
Hanjiang River, Huaihe River and Oujiang River Estuary.
The Project of Qinhuaihe River Ecological Restoration
The Qinhuaihe River is one of Nanjing’s most scenic spots. Its
present name comes from the ancient legend of Emperor
Qinshihuang, the first Emperor of China, who sliced Fang Mountain
to make the Huaishui River flow through into Nanjing. It has turned
into a popular tourist destination for its aesthetic merging of temples,
shops, and landscape. The Confucius Temple created in memory of
Confucius located at riverside of the Qinhuaihe is one of the most
famous Chinese thinkers and educators in ancient China.
