This is the suggested sequence to use during the horse project. We found this order to be the best way to cover all the material involved with the project. 1. What do you know about Horses? Students list their previous knowledge of horses and discuss as a class. 2. Horse Structure Use 2 student volunteers Use materials listed to “turn” these students into a horse Discuss the body parts and their functions: Mane/Tail – Mop Heads Ears – Large plastic cups Hooves – Buckets Nose – Big Clown Nose Teeth – Nutcracker Eyes – Glasses w/out forward vision Back – Flat board or 2 by 4 Coat – Wool Blanket Muscular Twitch – Fly Swatter 3. Horse Classification Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species 4. Horse Hoofs Use horse hoof prints in plaster to find psi of horse hoof. 5. Horse Behavior Warning Signals and Communication 6. Horse Diet 7. Horse Sounds Nay Contest 8. Equine Coat Color Information Talks about the variety and combination of colors that horses coats express. 9. Genetics and Equine Vocabulary Practice 10. Heredity and Genetics Review Review of genetics vocab and punnett squares. 11. Should This Horse Called “Toby”? 12. Equine Characteristics Practice Genetic crosses between horses and the effects on their coat color. 13. Horse Monohybrid Crosses 14. Horse Evolution Background information 15. Horse Power Point Presentation Will review horse genetics and thoroughly cover horse evolution including: hoofs, legs, size, and teeth. 16. How do Fossils Show Change?
