Lowell, Issue 7 Editor in Chief Edie Mileham Room 122 Friday News October 17, 2008 Headlines From Our Class This week we filled our marble jar and invited Ms. Viglianti’s class over for indoor recess! We’ve decided that when we next fill our jar, we’ll visit Ms. Galle in her new classroom. Bug award winner: Kira Gottschalk for always doing her best work. Today was Ms. Galle’s last day in the classroom. We really enjoyed having her! We are also excited to welcome Ms. Schmidt to our class. Her introductory letter is attached to the newsletter. She has been student teaching in one of Lowell’s early childhood classrooms and is excited to graduate to kindergarten! Literacy Highlights This week we enjoyed two non-typical literacy/writing projects. We made and labeled monster faces after reading our new favorite book Go Away Big Green Monster. These creative projects will be displayed in our school showcase starting in November. Our other writing project occurred on Friday when EVERYONE decided to write Ms. Galle an “I’ll Miss You” card. Some of us had extra time and were able to write someone else a card as well. This week, we all learned the new word “is” although most of us continued practicing some of the other words we’ve learned so far such as “like,” “I,” “the,” “no,” “yes” and “is” in addition to our new word. If you, as a parent, can also help with studying these words at home, it will really help your child succeed! Math Spotlight In math this week, we measured lines with little worms, practiced our numbers, played a shape memory game, made ABB patterns with two different shaped beads, dotted AAB patterns, added “pumpkin seeds” together, used linking cubes to make identical shapes, put the life cycle of a pumpkin in order, and read a book called Inch by Inch about an inchworm who has his life spared when he measures various parts of birds. As a follow up, we discussed how big an inch is and different ways (ruler or inch long tile) to measure something in inches. We also estimated the length of bird beaks, tails, legs, and bodies, then measured them to see how long they really were. Announcements Our class has REALLY LOVED the Go Away Big Green Monster book in our classroom. I noticed it was for sale in the Sept. issue of Scholastic. I think I can still place an order for this book (it’s hard cover and only 7$ instead of 10$ at stores) if you’d like it.
