Overview of Fieldwork requirements by University The CTC requires that candidates complete a minimum of six hundred (600) hours of supervised field practice performing the functions of school counselors in a K-12 public school setting. The following is an overview of the requirements for USF and SFSU graduate interns. The student will provide more specifics upon placement and as together you develop educational goals. University of San Francisco (USF) Counseling Intern requirements I. First year Fall semester: 100 clock hours, equivalent to 1 day per week. The goal for the intern during this semester is to: 1. Shadow and observe an experienced school counselor, 2. Become oriented to the school culture, 3. Participate in school-based meetings and activities, 4. Observe classroom instruction, 5. Learn school and community-based programs and resources, and 6. Begin to meet with students. II. First year Spring Semester: 200 clock hours, equivalent to 1.5/2 days per week. The goal for the intern during this semester is to: 1. Understand their role in the school setting, 2. Develop their counseling skills, legal and ethical practices, cross cultural issues, and practice strategies in prevention and early intervention strategies in the school setting. III. Second year Fall Semester: 150-200 clock hours, equivalent to 1.5/2 days per week, based on school site need. The goal for the intern during this semester is to: 1. Further refine counseling skills and practicing group counseling skills, 2. Engage in prevention and early intervention activities, and 3. Provide intervention strategies in the classroom IV. Second year, Spring semester: 150-200 clock hours, equivalent to 1.5/2 days per week, based on school site need. The goal for the intern during this semester is to: 1. Practice their individual and group counseling skills, as well as their academic and career counseling skills, 2. Consult with parents and teachers as they counsel students, and 3. Consult with schools in developing additional and comprehensive student services. San Francisco State University Counseling Intern requirements Over the four semesters graduate students are required to work a minimum of 840 hours. A minimum of 280 of these hours must be direct client contact. I. II. First year (Fall and Spring semester): 12 clock hours per week, equivalent to 1.5 days or 2 shorter days a week. Second year (Fall and Spring Semester): 16 clock hours per week, equivalent to 2 days a week. The goal for the intern during these semesters regardless of year: 1. Become oriented to the school culture. 2. Participate in school-based meetings and activities. 3. Learn school and community-based programs and resources, 4. Understand their role in the school setting. 5. Develop their counseling skills, legal and ethical practices, cross cultural issues, and practice strategies in prevention and early intervention strategies in the school setting. 6. Practice their individual and group counseling skills, as well as their academic and career counseling skills, 7. Consult with parents and teachers as they counsel students, and 8. Consult with schools in developing additional and comprehensive student services. Additional Universities Occasionally PPSC graduate interns from other universities will seek field placement in SFUSD. When these students are sent to site supervisors to interview, they will provide them with their graduate program’s requirements. The site supervisor should solicit from and discuss with the candidate these requirements so that the site supervisor can determine if the candidate is the best fit.
