This award was named after Dr. Maryann Hartman, who was an associate professor of speech communication at the University of Maine from 1969 to 1980. She was recognized as a pioneer in the field of oral interpretation. Her work included research on women's communicative acts from historical, rhetorical, and aesthetic perspectives; comparisons of language patterns of Maine women and men born before 1900; oral autobiographies of Maine women born before 1900; and the use of oral interpretation to influence public policy. Teacher, scholar, advocate, friend, mother and woman of courage and vitality, Maryann Hartman died of cancer in 1980 at the age of 53. Nominee Criteria This award is given annually to three distinguished Maine women who demonstrate the levels of attainment now possible for women. Our committee looks for women with a significant relationship to Maine but does not limit nominees only to native Maine women. We look for the diversity in interests, service, geographic location, and culture that best represents Maine. Strong leadership and role modeling in the nominee's work are also important. Our committee would like candidates who will reflect and honor Maryann's commitment to women, her values, and her community. The only exception in this nomination process is that local, state, or national government officials cannot be nominated while they are running for office during an election year. Nomination Process Our committee has tried to make this nomination process as simple as it can possibly be, but we acknowledge that not everything is perfect. The basic items that you must pay particular attention to are the following: Deadline: The deadline for nominations is July 4, 2014. Please do not turn in any nomination forms after this date. We are expecting many nominations for this award and late entries only complicate our selection process. Entries should be sent to the Women's Studies Program. Supporting Materials: We do not need information on the nominee in exact resume or curriculum vitae form. We do ask, however, that you give the committee something that explains what the nominee has done throughout her life and career. This may be a summary of her education, her work, and any awards she may have received. More formal materials are also recommended (although not required). These might include newspaper articles or recommendations and letters of support from others who know the candidate, such as colleagues or friends. We want whatever information you have--everything we have will be considered during the selection process. Nomination Form: Please be sure that you use a separate form for each nomination you make. To find out if your suggestion has been nominated before or to request a nomination form, call 581-1228 or visit our website: http://umaine.edu/womensgenderandsexualitystudies/ Award Selection and Ceremony We will be selecting recipients in August. If your nominee is accepted, we will notify you at this time. If she is not, her nomination will automatically be carried over for one additional year. We want to thank all who went through the time and trouble of making a nomination. We will let you know our final decision and the date of the ceremony, which we hope you will attend. The awards ceremony will be held in October or November of 2014, and the nominee must be able to attend the ceremony to receive her award. If she is unable to attend, the award will be given to another candidate. Again, thank you for all your submissions, and we hope to see you at the awards ceremony!
