John J Hansell Memorial Scholarship The John J. Hansell Memorial Scholarship has been established at Roosevelt High School, Des Moines, Iowa in the memory of John J Hansell, a 1982 graduate of the school. John was an excellent scholar and athlete at Roosevelt. He graduated from Colorado College with honors and received his law degree from Columbia University in New York City, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Business Law Review. John practiced law in Seattle, Washington, until his illness forced him to withdraw from the practice of law. John died of cancer on June 4, 1998 at the age of 34. The Scholarship fund has been established by gifts from Ed and Phyllis Hansell, John’s parents, and has been augmented by friends of Ed, Phyllis, and John. Each year a senior at Roosevelt will be selected by a selection committee to receive a $1000.00 scholarship award. The Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding senior who demonstrates academic excellence, exceptional ability in athletic and a commitment to community service. Students must plan to attend a college or university and must submit the standard application along with the required essays, references, and transcript.
