Ideal for absolute beginners. Learn to start up the computer and perform common tasks such as creating and managing files and folders, and using Internet and e-mail. Entry Requirements: None. Intermediate (Next Steps) computer course: An opportunity to learn about software packages in more depth. Entry Requirements: Basic Computing (or relevant experience). Intermediate 2 (Advanced) computer course: Learn even more than Intermediate 1 and become an expert in more complex tasks. Entry requirements: Intermediate 1 or Basic Computing. Using a Laptop: Learn basic computing on a laptop. Learners are encouraged to bring their own if possible. Entry Requirements: None. Using an iPad/tablet: This course is designed to introduce learners to the basics of using an iPad or tablet computer. Learners are encouraged to bring their own device if possible. Entry Requirements: None. Internet/Email: This course is designed to introduce learners to useful websites, online shopping and how to use email. Entry: Limited experience of using a computer. ECDL: European Computer Drivers Licence is a globally recognised qualification that covers all areas of computing. Entry: Limited experience of using a computer. Reading, Writing and Numbers: A wide range of learning opportunities are available in the library (and other locations) to help adults develop their reading, writing, numeracy and communication skills (including 1 to 1 sessions if desired). Sessions are run by Community Learning & Development, who can be contacted directly on 01475 715 481. Family History/Genealogy: Introduction to using the Internet to search for family history. Useful web sites identified. Entry Requirements: Basic computer and Internet experience. Job Skills IT: Learn basic IT skills to help you find work: using word processing to help build a CV, and using the Internet to search for jobs and set up an e mail address. Local History: Research and discussion and other areas of interest. Creative Writing: A great course for budding authors or enthusiastic readers. Digital Photography: Learn how to work your digital camera and download images to your computer. Topics include basic editing, printing and presentation of new photographs, as well as how to scan and edit old photos. Learners should bring their own digital camera. Entry Requirements: Basic computer skills required. Desktop Publishing: This course looks at the hardware and software needed for dealing with digital images as well how to capture, store, prepare and present digital still images. Entry Requirements: Basic computer skills required; preferably also Digital Photography. 2 FUNDING Many of the courses are FREE or we’ll let you know about fees before you sign up. For some courses fees may be applicable, but there are often fee waivers available to people on certain benefits, e.g. Jobseekers Allowance, Pension Credit, Incapacity Benefit, etc. A lot of courses may also be eligible for ILA (Individual Learning Account) funding; this grant of £200 a year can be used to cover fees for certain courses. Anyone over 16 with an annual income of less than £22,000 can apply. For more information on ILAs, or to apply, please phone 0800 917 8000. ACCESS FOR BEGINNERS TO COMPUTING (ABC) PROJECT ABC Project: The Inverclyde Libraries ABC Project has been set up to offer one-to-one IT training to those with additional support needs, and to provide a range of adaptive computer equipment and specialist software to suit different user’s requirements. This is currently a free service provided through ICOD (Inverclyde Council on Disability) and funded by the Big Lottery Fund. The aim is to help people who have never had the opportunity to use a computer before, teaching new IT skills and removing barriers to learning and employability. Many courses are now SQA-accredited. Some of the assistive tools and equipment available are: Screen Magnifiers /Screen Readers Large Mice/ Joysticks Large keyboards Keyboard Covers Raised Key Letters Scanners Embossing / Braille machine Dyslexia help The ABC tutor can discuss your needs and offer IT solutions which may be of benefit, and will show you how to use the equipment before any general or specific IT training begins.
