Michael P. Smith Dignity and Compassion Award
Purpose and definition
To recognize and honor a Registered Radiologic Technologist who shows dignity and compassion towards
patients and co-workers, understands individual’s needs, shows empathy and provides support in a way
that respects all people equally.
Examples of how the individual meets at least three of the following must be provided:
 Communicates sensitively with patients and their family members
 Listens carefully
 Provides emotional support
 Respects patients’ values, culture, choices and decisions
 Understands the significance of patients’ families and their communities
 Displays extraordinary devotion and compassion in caring for patients and families
 Understands the need for due regard for the feelings, wishes, and rights of others
 Promotes a sense of mutual respect amongst health care team members
 Displays honesty, fairness and makes decisions that benefit others
