The chapter thrived at the University of Buffalo until 1972, when it was dissolved due to lack of
interest caused by turmoil that was occurring on campus due to a change in State University
policies which banned all fraternities of any type on campus.
Pre-Petitioning
During the Autumn of 1987, Mark Purdue wanted to participate in a Brothers/Pledge only party at
the X Chapter (State University of New York at Fredonia). His friend, Dana Andrews (then a
pledge at X) told him that if he said that he would try to start a chapter at UB, he would
probably get in. Mark agreed to the stipulations. He then participated in a service project and in
the party. Greatly impressed with the principles of , Mark decided to hold true to his
promise.
In the spring of 1988, he formed an interest group consisting of 9 people. The only other member
to remain from the original group to the time of the Rechartering Ceremony besides Mark was
Jonathan Bearfield.

Chapter Traditions:
Chairman of the Collection Committee - “Chuck” It is the baseball bat originally
donated to the chapter by Howard Kramer to assist in collection of outstanding moneys
owed. Upon being misplaced, the Eta Pledge Class donated a replacement.
The Grand Poobah: It is the immediate past president. His duties entail: The Carrier of
the Keg; The Keeper of the Tap; Shiner of the Doorknob; and performance of the Kiwi
Dance at any official function, while wearing the coconut bra, donated by Joe Trocchio,
1995 Miss California Girl.” New coconut bra was donated by the Alpha Gamma pledge
class because old one was misplaced.
Letter Days: It is when all brothers wear letters on campus. Planned by the VicePresident of Fellowship.
Pledge and Letters: It is the tradition of this chapter that pledges are not allowed to wear
Greek letters except for promotional purposes.
The Traveling Dude: A little brown teddy bear with a paisley tie. It is the Epsilon Sigma
Chapter’s Official Mascot. The chapter won it as an unofficial man-mile award at
Oneonta.
