Use words and phrases in discussions to make a positive contribution to moving discussion forward
Assessor observation: Candidate ensures that own contribution uses positive/constructive language. The candidate does not divert the
discussion unnecessarily, but intervenes on more than one occasion to move the discussion forward using words and phrases that maintain
the flow and forward momentum of the discussion.

Contribute ideas, views and information to move the discussion forward
Assessor observation: Candidate ensures that own contribution of ideas, views and information helps to progress the discussion towards a
decision or solution. The candidate does not divert the discussion unnecessarily, but intervenes on more than one occasion to move the
discussion forward using own contribution of ideas, views and information that maintain the flow and forward momentum of the discussion.
2.1
Adapt contributions to discussions to suit audience, context, purpose and situation
Assessor observation: Candidate adapts the frequency, length and level of detail of their own contributions to suit different people in the
group, any change in the direction of the topic and the direction/flow of the discussion

Use words and phrases to intervene in order to develop a point and/or change a topic
Assessor observation: Candidate expands on a topic point to ensure that it is explored by the group effectively, and/or summarises the topic
so that the discussion can move on to another topic/aspect of the topic. For example, ‘So, in summary, I think you are saying…’ or ‘You
should also consider that…’ or ‘I like your point, but we need to stay focussed on….’

Support own opinions and arguments with factual information and knowledge so that views are accepted
Assessor observation: Candidate supports own opinions, arguments and points of view with factual information and knowledge drawn from
own research so that others in the group are convinced of the points made. For example, using facts to respond to another person’s
challenge or opposing view.
5.1
Use techniques to signal cooperation, respect, reassurance and trust to members of a discussion group
Assessor observation: Candidate uses gestures and phrases to show support for other members of the group. For example, nodding to
agree with a point made by another, and using phrases such as ‘good point’, ‘I’m not sure I agree, but I can see why you think this…’
