A panel of three (3) APS accredited judges will be evaluating the exhibits based on
guidelines delineated in the APS’ Manual of Philatelic Judging. The guidelines include
coverage of the subject, rarity, condition, presentation, relevance of the material, evidence of
research, variety of material and so forth, with some criteria varying according to the type of
exhibit. The panel’s decisions are final in all respects. The distinguished jury for the 2014
Mid-Cities Stamp Expo is:
John Hotchner Mr. Hotchner has been a collector since age 5, and now collects about 20
countries (at least one on every continent), and worldwide EFOs and 19th century number
and letter cancels of the world. He has been an exhibitor since 1976, and an accredited APS
judge since 1986, and at the FIP level since 1989. He is perhaps best known as Linn's weekly
"US Notes" columnist; writing for Linn's since 1976, and regularly for another ten philatelic
periodicals. He is currently the president of the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors,
and was editor of its journal, The Philatelic Exhibitor for its first 25 years. He also served on
the board of the APS for 16 years including a term as president. He is now retired from a 45
year career with the US Department of State, and devotes most of his time to philatelic
pursuits, and trying to convince his ten grandchildren to be stamp collectors!
KathyJohnson:
Kathryn Johnson comes to us from Chicago. She is an accredited APS Judge and on the
CANEJ Board. She is a former Director at Large for the APS, and most recently the APS
Treasurer. Her specialty collecting interest is Ceylon, and she exhibits Ceylon, Mauritius, VMail and Airgraphs, Honduras, First Day Covers, Galena, IL and Canada. She is a member of
the APS, Royal Philatelic Society of London, the Collectors Club of Chicago, AAPE and a
number of other collecting organizations.

Guided Missile Operational Readiness Evaluation Team
Vocation:
Retired after 30+ years with the United States Government as Senior Weapons System
Engineer for the Fleet Technical Support Center Atlantic, Norfolk, Virginia. Areas of
responsibility included weapons, electronics, communications and engineering systems on
United States Navy combatant ships. The position also involved on board ship assistance to
the German, Spanish and Japanese guided missile programs. Additionally served as Foreign
Military Sales representative and coordinator for the United States Navy to Egypt, Greece,
Taiwan and Turkey.
