Course Title
Motivational Interviewing: An Introduction (Two day programme).
Who can apply?
This course is being organised jointly by AOTI and IASLT. Occupational Therapists and Speech
and Language Therapists working in the Republic of Ireland may apply. It is funded by the HSE.
Course Introduction
Motivational interviewing (MI) skills are utilised by a broad range of health and social care
professionals in diverse settings to facilitate behaviour/lifestyle change in patients and clients.
MI originally developed in the alcohol field has been increasingly used to facilitate change in a
range of health behaviours including mental health issues, substance misuse, smoking cessation,
diet and exercise programmes.
The Course Aimis to introduce participants to the basic concepts, principles and strategies of
Motivational Interviewing.
Course Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, participants should be able to demonstrate:
 Knowledge of the basic concepts of Motivational Interviewing & behaviour change
 Understanding of the link between motivation and behaviour change
 Awareness of the key principles and strategies of motivational interviewing
 Understanding of the trans-theoretical model of behaviour change
 Understanding of the spirit of motivational interviewing
 Practical skills for dealing with ambivalence and resistance to change
 Ability to apply motivational interviewing principles and strategies to their
work/practice setting
Course Content
 Introduction to concepts of behaviour change
 Overview of Motivational Interviewing
 Principles of motivational interviewing
 Overview of the transtheoretical model of change
 Introduction to the early strategies of Motivational Interviewing
 Spirit of Motivational interviewing
 Dealing with ambivalence and resistance to change
 Application of principles and strategies of MI to participants work/practice setting.

About the Presenter - James O’Shea
MA, H dip., BSc (Psycht.), HGDip RPN, RGN, MIAAAC, MBACP, M.I.N.T.










James is an Accredited Psychotherapist (BACP) and Accredited Addiction Counsellor
(IAAAC), Registered Psychiatric Nurse and Registered General Nurse (Irish Nursing Board).
His academic qualifications include a first class Honours Degree in Psychotherapy as well as
a first class honours Postgraduate Diploma and Masters Degree in Education
James has worked in the Irish Mental Health and Addiction fields for twenty seven years. He
has extensive experience of lecturing, curriculum development and quality assurance within
the third level education sector. He currently lectures on a number of programmes at NUI
Maynooth.
He has trained with Professors William Miller and Stephen Rollnick the originators of
Motivational Interviewing (MI) and is registered internationally as a Motivational
Interviewing Trainer (MINT).
He has trained in Cognitive Behavioural Coping Skills, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and
Human Givens Counselling
He has developed with Colleagues a model for the delivery of Brief Intervention in front line
health care settings and a national Guiding Framework for the delivery of brief Intervention
for Nurses and Midwives nationally.
He has developed with colleagues a model for the delivery of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
training in the Irish Mental Health Service and is currently project lead for a national CBT
training programme.
He has worked as an Education Manager in the Irish health service for many years. He was
employed as Project Manager for the HSE’s National Addiction Training Programme from
2007 to 2009. This involved setting up and project managing a national training programme
for addiction services in Ireland.
He has many years experience of training health and social care professionals on Brief
Intervention, Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
His primary clinical experience is within the mental health field with a specialist interest in
addictions, counselling and behaviour change.
He has numerous publications in the mental health area and is co author and developer of the
SAOR Model© of Brief Intervention. Other publications include “Cognitive Behavioural
Skills for Practice: A Model for Delivery in the Irish Mental Health Service” and “Certificate
in Science in Health Care: A Model for Academic Accreditation of Continuing Professional
