Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy related to this particular delivery of the programme.
The main aim of the programme is to provide a basis for career development through the sport coaching profession within the sport of Tennis. There is
a primary emphasis on developing a critical understanding of sport management, business and administration through the examination of underpinning
theories, models, concepts and research skills pertinent to the overall managing of the coaching management process. This programme critically
evaluates strategic planning, human resource management, sport marketing and sport finance within Tennis and across the sport industry in the UK
and internationally. More specifically the programme promotes application and critical evaluation of vocationally relevant concepts to the work place
and the role of a sports coach through a work-based learning approach and experiential professional practice. This programme utilises the state of the
art facilities offered at the Lawn Tennis Associations (LTA) offices in Roehampton and associated Information Technology equipment at the LTA to
enhance the practice and analytical skills of the tennis coaches engaged with this programme. Students will assess and critique the impact of current
sport business models and systems utilised in the development of sport management expertise.
Reflective practice is a core feature of the theoretical framework underlining sport coaching as a profession and the programme is designed to offer
students the opportunity to engage in reflection linked to Continuous Professional Development activities and a work-based project. Employer
engagement is at the heart of all university strategic plans and by adopting a distance delivery approach there is scope for an individual to integrate
under graduate study alongside their full time or part-time employment in the LTA. The Academic Recognition for CPD module will include delivery of
one day workshops by the academic team to the LTA Tennis coaches engaged with the programme; this will form the Sport Management focus of the
new learning and up skilling of the LTA coach workforce.
The curriculum reflects academic and professional developments in the sport management field, academic staff expertise and the key knowledge and
competencies highlighted and recommended by the professional body (Sports Coach UK) for higher education levels of study at under graduate. The
design of the programme reflects market research undertaken by the Department of Sport Development, Management and Coaching which included
practitioner involvement in developing and formulating the structure of the programme and the modules of study across the three levels.
As detailed in the Framework for Professional Practice Awards in Sport this programme has an applied focus and is guided by key professional
competencies outlined in the UK Coaching Certificate which detail the need for sport coaches to engage in development of management and business
up skilling. Throughout the programme students are encouraged to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical settings relevant to tennis specifically
but also allowing broader application to the wider context of the sport industry as a whole. This focus upon professional skills and vocational practice is
in line with the University Mission to promote employability and also to promote additional opportunities for flexible learning structures to up skill the
current workforce. The programme teaching team includes four highly qualified sport management/business experts all of which have professional
management experience from across the sport industry. All staff are currently engaged with a variety of research/consultancy work at both national and
international levels.
Specifically the programme aims to:




provide an understanding of the conceptual framework which underpins sport management
equip the student with an understanding of developing sport business and administration structures
provide a focus on the application of theory to real world coaching management practice through the work based learning approach
provide students with a range of professional skills of significance in the sport coaching profession

Learners engaged with the tennis coaching management programme will need to be able to manage and take forward their learning alongside
current daily work activities within sport environments, to support this every learner in the workplace will have a guidance tutor from the
Department of Development, Management and Coaching who will be able to advise on aspects of the programme from an academic
perspective. Of equal importance are the supervisors based in the LTA (where appropriate) who will be able to offer advice from the workplace
perspective and within the sport specialism (LTA work-based supervisors will be provided with training relating to the requirements of this role).
As learners negotiate their learning journey through the tennis coaching management programme they will be able to draw on the full range of flexible
and work-based learning provision laid down within the Northumbria Work-Based Learning Framework. This details that all learners will be provided
with the following:






assistance to identify opportunities within the organisation to address programme and module learning outcomes
academic support between the learner and the employer with regard to project identification, approval and implementation

Identifying individual learning pathways and negotiating individual learning programmes are key aspects of success within the tennis coaching
management programme with learning needs addressed through a training needs analysis that enables learners to identify the specific aims and
objectives, learning outcomes, methodology and scope of their individual learning requirements. The level and extent of the learning is determined by:




the current level of a student’s learning,
the particular demand of the learning,
the context in which this is applied
the degree of autonomy the student accepts as they undertake the programme
When learners register on the tennis coaching management programme it commences with a comprehensive induction programme at the LTA
Roehampton Offices which aims to provide information and support on all aspects of the WBL student experience. This induction includes an

introduction to the guidance tutor system within the School and an explanation of the purpose and process of the tutorial system. Guidance tutors are

This includes tutorials on accessing learning resources such as electronic data bases, journals and e-mail, ICT systems and advanced statistical
