AP Biology Synthesis Question 1
Living Metabolism – Part 1
Directions: After completing the class discussion of the Lining Metabolism – Part 1 outline, give
students the following question and allow them one minute to read, without their notes, and
brainstorm. Then allow four minutes to write concisely to answer.
Question: All organisms on Earth require Free Energy to live from day to day, to maintain organization,
and to fuel reproduction. Free energy is also associated with the cellular molecule ATP. Electrons, which
are a source of energy, would be like an AAA battery; ATP, also an energy source, on the other hand,
would be like a car battery, much more powerful for cells. In no more than four sentences, briefly
explain, using an energy molecule such as carbohydrate, how the processes of Catabolism and
Anabolism in a cell, are united with regards to ATP production, heat production, and energy coupling. (5
Points)
Scoring Rubric:
1pt. For discussion involving the Catabolism of the energy molecule to release free
energy and heat. (Deduct a half point for not mentioning Free Energy OR Heat.)
1pt. For discussion involving Anabolism and Free energy being used to help produce
ATP.
1pt. For discussion of energy coupling being two different processes unit by energy.
1pt. Correct use of scientific terms.
1pt. Answer has no more than three sentences. (Following Directions.)
