Students in Nunavut are encouraged to learn contemporary science within the context of Inuit history, values, traditions, beliefs, and, where appropriate, language (Department of Education, 2005). Students are encouraged to develop their understanding of both traditional and contemporary science knowledge. Learning of one and not the other limits the richness of the science learning experience provided for students in Nunavut schools. Instead science should be a blend of contemporary and traditional science knowledge built within the context of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ).
