HISTORY AND INDEX OF THE
Journal of the Virgin Islands Archaeological Society
(1974-1980)
by Alfredo E. Figueredo
HISTORY
The Virgin Islands Archaeological Society was founded and incorporated
on 30 January 1974. From its foundation, the corporate purpose of this Society
envisioned the publishing of a Journal to disseminate its activities and be a
memorial for learning. The Publications Committee was first made up of the
Editor, Kenneth C. Dick, and Alfredo E. Figueredo, Patrick M. Rice and
Norman Willock. It was decided to publish the first issue of the Journal as soon
as possible.
At this time, the St. Thomas Chapter had more members, and the venue
of publication for the years 1974-1977 was the Society’s headquarters at
Havensight, St. Thomas. This was a building leased to the Society by Antilles
School for $ 1.00 a year.
Originally, the Journal was projected as a quarterly. The first issue would
be labeled volume I, and it would be followed by volume II, numbers 1, 2, 3
and 4. The difficulties of putting together volume I, and the lack of submitted
articles, made this impossible. After the appearance of volume I, it was decided
to make the Journal an annual, and number them sequentially: number 2 (1975),
3 (1976), 4 (1977), etc.
Some mistakes were made with volume I. The choice of paper was
indifferent, and the typeface was too small at ten points. The illustrations came
out grainy. However, when we went to press with number 2, things turned
worse. We selected the lowest bid, and the first printing had so many errors
that we decided to print it again before publishing it.
Issue number 3 came out much better, but the illustrations and paper
was as before. By this time, we had succeeded in achieving a circulation of
about 250 copies, some 75 being libraries and maybe 20 other being similar
institutions.
During 1977, when issue number 4 was due, the editorial tasks fell to the
Editor, Kenneth C. Dick, Katheryne Brooks Kay-Willock, and Gary S.
Vescelius. Alfredo E. Figueredo was then busy in graduate school. The editors
decided to do away with justified margins and continue with indifferent paper.
It seemed that the quality of the Journal would nosedive.
Something had to be done. Alfredo E. Figueredo became Assistant
Editor in 1978, and it was decided to publish two issues each year, in glossy
paper with justified margins. The idea was to meet minimum standards of
periodicity and acceptable scientific publication standards. Thus 1978 saw the
appearance of Journals number 5 and 6. With the growing importance of the St.
Croix Chapter, the venue of publication changed from Havensight, St. Thomas,
to Fort Frederik, St. Croix.
Great effort was made to acquire more museum and university
subscriptions, and to stock these places with complete runs of the Journal.
Increasingly, more submissions for publication were received, and the issues
began getting larger. Also, some articles merited off-prints, usually of 150
copies.
The only articles before 1978 to be off-printed were the “History of
Virgin Islands Archaeology,” by Alfredo E. Figueredo, and “Notes on Artifact
Illustrations,” by Jeffrey M. Gross. Each off-print consisted of 150 copies;
later, Figueredo’s article was off-printed again in 1978 with 250 copies.
Issue number 6 was a triumph for the Society, for the first time covering
the entire Caribbean area. The year 1979 saw more growth, with many
contributions coming in and more articles than ever being off-printed. Not
only were we publishing articles from far and wide, but the number and quality
of our local articles were increasing.
The first issue for 1980, number 9, seemed to bring us closer to
becoming a quarterly publication, as originally envisioned. For the first time,
we accepted advertising. However, the year ushered in hard economic times,
and this coincided with the declining health of our Editor, Kenneth C. Dick,
and the unmanageable state of affairs of the Assistant Editor, Alfredo E.
Figueredo.
The next issue, number 10 (the cover date is 1980), was a long time
coming. In point of fact, it was not distributed until early in 1982. The task of
putting it together and publishing it tried the resources of the few leading
individuals, and of the group at large. For a number of years, we kept the
illusion of beginning a new series. This is still a worthy goal for the future. But
human beings can only do so much, and the project of this Journal, brilliant as it
was for a time, exhausted itself.
