Makes Charge of Bigamy
Woman, in Divorce Petition, Alleges That Husband Has Wife
And Children in Canada
Mrs. Mary Bassett yesterday filed a petition for divorce from her
husband, Frank Bassett. According to her petition, she is fifty-two years of
age and at the time of her marriage to Bassett, he presented to her that he
was an “old bachelor”. They were married in this city June 11, 1902. The
present Mrs. Bassett’s maiden name was ‘Mueller’ and this she asks the courts
to restore.
The grounds of Mrs. Bassett’s petition are somewhat peculiar. She
accuses her husband of having fraudulently induced her to enter into a
marital contract with him in that he represented himself to her as a single
man. She says this was not true. A first wife is said by No. 2 to be living
in Wallaceburg, Ont. Surrounded by five children.
In addition to this reason for wishing herself free, the plaintiff
declares that in her two years of married life, her husband had deserted her
five times. Since the last desertion, she says, her husband has sent her in
the way of supplies, only one pair of shoes and a basket of groceries.
