Minutes November 17, 2009 Minutes approved after changes which include: changing of wording in Institute surveys: line 2. to show that an assessment of the institute was completed in the past. Discussion of pre/post surveys A discussion of the data in the pre/post institute surveys was done to determine areas of the institute that can be modified for future use. Comments for activities the committee could do for the current semester include: working with and allocating funds to groups that are giving small presentations within the university such as; global studies, and the possibility of including two videos, “A Day without a Mexican”, and “Immigrants from South Mexico”. Working with Black heritage month and Women’s history month are two other groups available to collaborate with. Women’s studies discussed bringing in a speaker named Frances Aparicio who is a representative of Latina as individuals and uses cultural experiences in her lecture. Black studies have a speaker on February 26, Rachel Moran, who served in Law. LGBT could benefit by allocating funds to a reception. Budget was also discussed. Virginia Cassidy mentioned that some funds had been given to the library, and could be used to purchase videos. Also, allocation to other groups is a possibility and if interested give an estimated budget with a limit of $100, collection of speakers and sponsors to Katy Smith. Keynote Speaker Keynote speaker possibilities were discussed. Suggestions include: an individual who received an excellence in undergraduate teaching award, and bringing back past keynote speakers. Suggested speakers were: Barbra Love, Paula Rothenberg, Maurianne Adams, and Ruby Paine. A suggestion was made to watch “You Tube” videos of colloquiums of the possible speakers. Discussion of MCT Institute 2011 Given the information on the pre/post surveys, areas of the institute were discussed. Suggestions include: a panel on disabilities which Greg Long would be a possible leader. And Learning disabilities could be addressed with Gregg Conderman as a possible leader. Social class can be looked at within each panel. Class as it refers to constructs raised in poverty and other classes and is more than income, population, and education. Some individuals feel this is too big an issue for one panel, and is crosses into other areas. Managing a diverse classroom could be done in the small groups and doesn’t necessarily need a speaker. Managing a diverse classroom should include information on seating arrangements, approaches, learning styles, and handling disruptive students in the classroom. Religion was agreed upon, to be dropped in the institute until further notice. Suggestions for the selection of the panelists were developed and include: be clear on what the committee wants them to say, give them a structured time frame, meet with speakers in February and March before they speak, have a rubric or guideline sheet, and approach the speaker as are you willing to do it this way.
