About the performance (from Bethel's promotional materials):
Charlie Bethel is an actor currently performing his one-man show, BEOWULF. This classic monster tale
and morality poem is reanimated in a translation Bethel describes as, "new, fast and loose, and chock full of
gruesome imagery." With typical candor, Bethel goes on to say, "For those of us who hated it in 8th grade, I
can assure you that I won't be wearing any fur or metal, and I promise not to try to play an instrument or
speak any kind of ancient English. My focus groups have been riveted!" As you know, Beowulf, a tale of a
hero and his dangerous and ultimately fatal exploits, is one of the oldest surviving examples of ancient
English poetry. Much simplified, the plot encompasses the story of a man who kills monsters, enjoys hearty
friendships and fruitful alliances, becomes a king and then dies in battle with a dragon. Written down around
900, the cultural roots of the poem go back past the dawn of literacy. "Its themes are timeless and
archetypal," says Bethel in a note on the translation, "the impermanence of life, the certainty of the ultimate
uncertainty of mortality and the courage required to engage the simple act of living, the intertwining
experiences of men and monsters are all themes the impact of which has remained fearfully present in
humans for longer than we have had language to express our experiences."
