Behaviour Management and Psychological Issues in Older People
a 1-day Workshop by
Carol Hunter
Carol Hunter is a clinical psychologist who specialises in providing care and treatment to older people who live at home or in an
aged care setting. Carol’s background includes working in acute psychogeriatrics, aged care and primary mental health. Carol’s
particular passion of study within this domain is in improving outcomes for individuals, their families and care staff. "Carol provides
her knowledge and insight across the three Adelaide Universities at a Post graduate level in the area of aged care in various
capacities including as a guest lecturer, writing training programs, marker and tutor. Carol also provides feedback on academic
research articles for both University students and for Journals. Carol delivers training and teaching to a range of healthcare
professionals including nursing staff on acute wards, aged care staff, Alzheimer’s Australia staff, and Masters Psychology students.
Carol also runs an online service and private practice providing therapy and consultancy to older persons, families and aged care
facilities. She is the National Chair and State Convener of the APS Psychology and Ageing Interest Group and has published on
working effectively with older people in aged care.
Workshop Summary
This workshop will address four key areas in working
with older people:
*Assessment Issues: in older people with possible
psychological disorders
*Delivery of Therapy: how to provide effective,
evidence-based therapy to older people
*Specific management of issues relating to dementias
and cognitive problems: addressing difficulties such as
wandering, repetitive questioning and other challenging
behaviours
*Working in Context: working with staff, carers and
family members
Key Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop participants will:
1. To have an increased awareness and recognition of
psychological problems in older people and use
appropriate diagnostic tools
2. To incorporate targeted, efficacious methods of
delivering therapy to older people
3. To identify, assess and effectively manage challenging
behaviours associated with dementias and cognitive
problems using a range of evidence-based approaches
4. To appreciate the importance of working with staff
members, carers and family members and learn strategies
to do this more effectively
