Challenge
Research, synthesize and effectively present 1 natural disaster with a focus on the impacts on the
human and natural systems.

Task
o In a group of 2-3 you will spend 2 periods creating a slideshow presentation that
demonstrates your valuable insight into the ways natural disasters affect our environment
(natural systems) and our everyday communities (human systems)
o Your slides should include 8-10 slides and information from your research that has been put
into YOUR own words.
Criteria (powerpoint OR Bristol board option)

Presentation tips

1. Title slide: What is your disaster? Define and use an impact photo
2. Location: Locate where on a world map this disaster is most likely to
occur?
3. How it works: Explain the process of HOW the disaster unfolds. What
tools are used to predict this disaster?
4. Natural system impact slide: Describe the impacts this disaster has on
the natural systems, for example: does it re-shape landscapes or
drainage patterns? (landscape, climate, drainage, vegetation,
wildlife)
5. Human system impact slide: Describe the impacts this disaster has on
human system.(roadways, buildings, recreation, tourism, lifestyle,
economy) Measurement – if there is a type of scale that measures this
disaster, include it and explain how it works
6. Disasters today slide: Share a recent example of where this natural
disaster has occurred AND explain the impact on both systems
7. Get, ready, get set slide: Explain how people use warning systems to
prepare their everyday lives for this natural disaster? How would you?
8. Conclusion slide: Summarize the main ideas and forecast any future
concerns
