Graduates completed their 20 hours of “boots on the ground” training learning about the value of maintaining healthy habitat along the coast including MDMR’s Coastal Preserves, Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain and Sandhill Crane National Refuge. These new volunteers will be matched with their interests and skill set to one or more public lands for natural habitat and wildlife projects. Volunteers are asked to contribute 100 volunteer hours over the course of two years for conservation and restoration projects. In addition to graduation, awards were presented to Habitat Stewards who have contributed 30, 60, 90, 100 and 150 volunteer hours. Stewards who have volunteered 150 or more hours become Mentors for large group work projects such as Community Collaborations, who engage college volunteer groups from throughout the nation for habitat and wildlife conservation and restoration work. As of December 1, 2014, the Mississippi Habitat Stewards Program has contributed 7337 volunteer hours to the conservation and restoration habitat management along the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s public lands.
