2014 MISSISSIPPI WILDLIFE FEDERATION ANNUAL REPORT
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Believing that the natural resources of the State of Mississippi are of
ecological, social, economic, recreational, and aesthetic value, which must be
guarded, perpetuated, and restored for posterity, and realizing that these ends
can be accomplished only through the cooperative efforts of an enlightened
people, we dedicate this Federation to those principles.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the Mississippi Wildlife Federation is to further and
advance the cause of conservation and environmental protection, and to
perpetuate, conserve and enhance the fish, wildlife, mineral, soil, water, air and
forest resources of the state; to promote and encourage responsible
management and use of all natural resources so that this generation and
posterity will receive the maximum benefit from them.
MISSION
The Mississippi Wildlife Federation’s mission is to conserve Mississippi’s
natural resources and protect our wildlife legacy.

GATOR BAIT RACES
Gator Bait is a 5.5-mile race for competitive and recreational kayakers, canoeists, and
SUP paddlers. The course runs through Pelahatchie Bay on the Ross Barnett Reservoir. MWF
partnered with MDEQ, Rezonate, Pearl River Valley Water Supply District and Keep the Rez
Beautiful to draw attention to the quality and condition of the water in the Reservoir and the need
to protect it through management, litter control, and conservation. Over 60 paddlers from all over
the Southeast participated.
The first annual Gator Bait Hatchling race was also held this past year for kids ages 5 to
17. The course length is tailored to each age group with a goal of introducing kids to the sport of
kayaking, fostering a love for the outdoors, and instilling a desire to protect their environment for
generations to come. There are 3 races per age group and kids are encouraged to participate in
as many races as they wish. Around 45 kids participated in the event.
OUTDOORAMA ON THE REZ
Our September 27 celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day, Outdoorama on the
Rez allowed young people to experience shooting sports, archery, fishing, canoeing and several
other educational activities. Our partner, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and
Parks helped plan another great day of outdoor activities that offered opportunities for kids and
adults to be exposed to a wide range of outdoor recreational options. In addition, a host of
organizations and individuals helped make this day a success. Approximately 400 people
attended.
M AGNOLIA RECORDS PROGRAM
MWF is pleased to partner with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and
Parks on this program. During the past year, scoring sessions were held throughout the state
and 7,523 deer are now entered in the MRP database. Dates and locations of scoring sessions
are listed below.

This year also marked the publishing of the second edition of Magnolia Records: Mississippi’s
Best Bucks. MWF printed 500 copies of the book for sale at the Wildlife Extravaganza and as a
fundraiser for MWF programs throughout the year.
OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY PRESENTATION AND WORKSHOP
Alex North and Jason Taylor presented one-day photography workshop at the Mississippi
Museum of Natural Science April 5, 2014.
HABITAT STEWARDS
The Mississippi Habitat Stewards Program added 11 newly trained conservation
volunteers to their ranks on Thursday, December 11, bringing the total number of Habitat Steward
Volunteers to 57. Graduates completed their 20 hours of “boots on the ground” training learning
about the value of maintaining healthy habitat along the coast including MDMR’s Coastal
Preserves, Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain and Sandhill Crane National Refuge.
These new volunteers will be matched with their interests and skill set to one or more public lands
for natural habitat and wildlife projects. Volunteers are asked to contribute 100 volunteer hours
over the course of two years for conservation and restoration projects.
In addition to graduation, awards were presented to Habitat Stewards who have
contributed 30, 60, 90, 100 and 150 volunteer hours. Stewards who have volunteered 150 or
more hours become Mentors for large group work projects such as Community Collaborations,
who engage college volunteer groups from throughout the nation for habitat and wildlife
conservation and restoration work. As of December 1, 2014, the Mississippi Habitat Stewards
Program has contributed 7337 volunteer hours to the conservation and restoration habitat
management along the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s public lands. These hours represent over
$200,000 dollars of “boots on the ground” field work, data collection, and monitoring for
restoration and habitat management.
