BE AN OCCUPATION SPECIALIST VOLUNTEER FOR ACCSC
For more than 40 years, the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) has been committed
to establishing and advancing quality education at private, postsecondary career schools and colleges. ACCSC is
dedicated to ensuring a quality education for more than 250,000 students who annually pursue education at
approximately 800 ACCSC accredited institutions across the United States.
ACCSC has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a reliable authority for the establishment of
educational standards since 1967. ACCSC’s scope of recognition by the U.S. Department of Education includes the
accreditation of private, postsecondary institutions that are predominantly organized to educate students for
occupational, trade and technical careers. The Commission’s recognized scope includes non-degree granting
institutions, degree-granting institutions up to master’s degree level as well as institutions that offer distance
education.
ACCSC’S work could not be accomplished without the dedication of qualified volunteers. Currently, ACCSC is
seeking individuals to serve as Occupation Specialists. These individuals are professionals from various
fields/disciplines who participate as members of on-site evaluation teams to review programs of study at ACCSC
accredited schools. Areas of review for an individual serving in the role of Occupation Specialist are: curricula,
facilities, instructional resources and equipment.
Although ACCSC on-site evaluations vary in length depending on the nature of the evaluation, the Occupation
Specialist joins the team only for a portion of the on-site activities, generally a timeframe not to exceed more than
four hours.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To serve as an ACCSC Occupation Specialist, the individual must have a minimum of five years working in the field
of study. It is also necessary for the individual to evaluate the relevance of the institution’s curricula, facilities,
equipment and instructional resources. Additionally, it is required that an Occupation Specialist be prepared to
professionally communicate observations to the evaluation team in order to assist in drawing its conclusions.
Lastly, in selecting individuals for onsite evaluation teams, ACCSC will match the Occupation Specialist’s experience
and educational level to the academic level of the program to be reviewed.
ACCSC provides a stipend to individuals who participate as Occupation Specialists during on-site evaluations
scheduled throughout the year. Additionally, prior to an on-site evaluation, a one hour self-paced on-line
orientation session and a review of materials prepared by the school, are required to be completed by the
Occupation Specialist. ACCSC pays the stipend and covers incidental expenses (i.e. mileage, some meals, parking)
through the use of an expense reimbursement form submitted to ACCSC once a review is complete.
