Math 095 Pre-Algebra Fall 2009 Instructor: Chris Baade This course will require you to do homework and take exams online. There is a final exam that will need to be proctored by a certified testing facility. The course is selfpaced, you can move through it as quickly as you like. There are very strict deadlines for taking the unit exams and final exam. No extensions of deadlines will be given. Purchasing the material online at the Thinkwell website: Have your credit card ready. Go to the Thinkwell website. You should see an orange box that says, “Student”. In that same box, there is the following button: . Click on that button and a menu of products will appear. Look under the mathematics section and click on “Pre-Algebra”. This will prompt you to materials provided. You will need to purchase the “Pre-Algebra” - Online Subscription and Workbook. Thus, click on the button for the “Beginning Algebra” - Online Subscription. Then click on the button so that you may go back and add the “Pre-Algebra” - Workbook to the cart. Make sure the items you add to the cart states they are “Pre-Algebra” material . . . otherwise, you may end up purchasing the wrong items. Check your cart and if all is correct, click on the “Check Out” button. At the next window, you should see the following button, . Select the one that states, “ Classroom Registration”. Once you do this, a few drop-down windows will appear: o Select a State – Make sure you select, “New Mexico”. o Select a School – Make sure you select, “San Juan College” o Select Course/Section – Make sure you select, “Pre-Algebra, Chris Baade”. Continue to follow the instructions and you will be at a page that will ask you for “Account Information”. This is where you will be required to give a password and confirm a password to log in to the course. Continue to fill out the required information and soon you will be registered for the course and added to the Thinkwell server. Here is the product you need to have purchased: 1-60538-023-7 Prealgebra 2nd Ed. w/ Workbook - Online Pkg (Retail Package + Print Companion) Coursework: The course is organized into 10 different chapters. 1. View the lectures in the course as many times as necessary. 2. Work through the assigned homework problems in the book(read the Assignment sheet for more detail). 3. Work through homework problems in the course(online). Work extra problems if necessary to feel comfortable with the material. 4. When all objectives for a chapter are completed, prepare for your exam. The exam will have approximately 20 questions of similar nature to those seen in the homework. 5. All problems worked out in the book and all work necessary for working out problems while taking the test must be turned in to Chris Baade within approximately 2 days after completing that chapter exam. This can be sent through the mail or faxed. Your grade on your exam is dependent on number correct and thoroughness of work submitted. If no work is turned in, you will receive a zero for that chapter exam score. There will be a comprehensive final at the end of the course that will need to be proctored. Final Exam Local Students: The final exam is a proctored exam. Local students will take their exam at SJC’s Testing Center(www.sanjuancollege.edu/test). These students will need to schedule their own final exam by calling and making an appointment through the Testing Center @ 566-3139 or 566-3329. The hours are Monday through Saturday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The allotted time for the final is 2 hours, therefore last appointment they will accept is 2:30 PM. The final exam can be taken any time after the unit exams are taken. The final must be taken no later than Dec 14th. The final exam is a comprehensive exam. There will be 40 questions on the final exam. The final exam is password protected and will be given to the SJC proctor only. A sample test for the final will be provided to help prepare for this exam. Final Exam Remote Students at Remote Locations: Students taking the course from remote locations will need to take the course at a Certified Testing Center or Counseling Department through an Institution of Higher Education(more information attched). For those students taking the course from a remote location, please seek prior approval regarding proctoring of the final exam. Please allow at least 1 week time for approval. The deadline for proctor approval form to be submitted is Oct 16th. The final exam is a comprehensive exam. There will be 40 questions on the final exam. The final exam is password protected and will be given to the proctor only. Calculator: No calculator will be allowed. Do not use it for the homework or exams since it may possibly make you a weaker student in the long run!
