Do not drink alcohol. This will cause a dry socket which is as painful as a toothache. 2. BLEEDING. Some bleeding is to be expected. If persistent bleeding occurs, place folded gauze over bleeding area and bite down firmly for 30 minutes. Do not chew on gauze. Repeat as needed. Pink saliva is normal. If heavy bleeding persists, call the office. 3. DO NOT rinse mouth. No mouthwash for 3 days. After 3 days you may rinse mouth gently using ½ teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to 1 cup of warm water every 3 to 4 hours (especially after meals) for several days. 4. SWELLING. Ice bag or chopped ice in a zipper bag wrapped in a towel may be applied to operated area 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off for 4 to 5 hours. (Ibuprofen also helps with pain and swelling.) 5. PAIN. For mild to average pain use any non-aspirin medication you prefer (aspirin inhibits clotting). Ibuprofen dose: 400 mg every 4 hours, 600 mg every 6 hours, or 800 mg every 8 hours. (2400 mg/day limit.) 6. FOOD. A light diet (soft foods) is advisable during the first 24 hours. No corn chips. Try to gently keep the socket free of food debris. 7. BONY EDGES. Small sharp bone fragments may work up through the gums during healing. These are not roots; if annoying or painful, return to this office for simple removal. 8. PROPER CARE FOLLOWING oral surgical extractions will hasten recovery and prevent complications. Expect 6 weeks for the gums to heal completely. 1. DO NOT SMOKE FOR 3 DAYS.
