American Board of Wound Management (ABWM)

ABWM, formerly the American Academy of Wound Management, is a voluntary,
not-for-profit organization established for the purpose of credentialing
interdisciplinary practitioners in the field of wound management. The organization
was founded by individuals with years of experience in wound care who were
dedicated to helping patients who suffer from acute and chronic wounds of various
etiologies. ABWM offers three wound certifications—Certified Wound Care
Associate®, Certified Wound Specialist®, and Certified Wound Specialist Physician®.
American College of Hyperbaric Medicine (ACHM)

ACHM was formed by a group of physicians practicing the developing specialty of
hyperbaric medicine who noticed the need to establish a national professional
organization that was dedicated to serving as a medical specialty society. ACHM has
worked to develop an image of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a distinct medical
specialty that often requires full-time practice.

American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA)

APWCA designates members that meet prescribed requirements as fellow, diplomate,
or associate, similar to a college-type of organization, while it serves as a full-service
medical association. Membership incorporates all of the various medical specialties
involved in treating complex wounds. Wound care education is provided in an
atmosphere that brings these fields together and facilitates an integrated,
multidisciplinary approach. APWCA’s mission is to “help decrease the rate of
complications from all wounds, including acute, chronic, postsurgical, postradiation,
reconstructive, and other problematic wounds.” Its goal is to accelerate wound
healing, and preserve and/or enhance the quality of life for these patients.

Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC)

AAWC, the preeminent multidisciplinary organization for wound care, is a nonprofit
association headquartered in the United States. This organization is open to everyone
involved in wound care, including clinicians, patients and their lay caregivers,
facilities, industry, students, retirees, and others interested in the care of wounds.
AAWC was conceived in 1995 to spread awareness by promoting excellence in
education, clinical practice, public policy, and research.
Canadian Association of Wound Care (CAWC)

CAWC is dedicated to the advancement of wound care in Canada by coordinating a
collaborative, interdisciplinary effort among individuals and organizations involved
with wound care. The association’s efforts focus on five key areas—public policy,
clinical practice, education, research, and connecting with the international wound
care community. CAWC works to significantly improve patient care, clinical
outcomes, and the professional satisfaction of wound care clinicians.

European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP)

related to wound management, actively supporting the implementation of existing

WCI is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization involved in the advancement of wound
healing and diabetic foot care. Educational seminars, research studies, educational
grants, a speakers’ bureau, preceptorship programs, and patient literature are offered.
Wound Healing Society (WHS)

WHS is a nonprofit organization composed of clinical and basic scientists. The
society provides a forum for interaction among scientists, physicians, licensed
practitioners, industrial representatives, and government agencies. Membership to
WHS is open to individuals who have a demonstrated interest in the field of wound
healing. Founded in 1990, the society’s membership consists of about 500 physicians,
residents, practitioners, students, and other researchers from the United States and
other countries. The society publishes the journal Wound Repair and Regeneration.
