158 A good entry for the time of year, as the abattoirs
get back in to the swing of things. Trade seemed a little
better especially for the under 36mo cattle. Best B&W
Cows sold towards 130p mainly in the 120's. Farm
assurance at the moment is making a difference please
check that you are still a member as this can make a
difference in the ring of at least 10p more on the
younger sorts. Also European and Irish bred cattle are
taking a knock on price £'s less if they don't have a UK
ear tag. The buyers tell us it is to do with traceability
and labelling. A very uncertain future for the trade at
the moment but it mainly depends on numbers and the
weather. For further details please do not hesitate to
contact our auctioneers to help with marketing your
cattle. For further information contact the Cull Cow Hot

BEEF
CATTLE
EVERY FRIDAY AT approximately 12noon
Prices peaked at 218 or £1,207.50
29 A disappointing entry for the start of the New Year as
trade is always better the first week because of the low
numbers entered in the abattoirs and stocks of fresh meat are
low. (The below Chart shows why there is often a demand in
the New Year). Trade was much better than previous weeks.
Some better finished cattle forward this week which were
well received by the buyers. Two nice Heifers from M & D J
Siddorn made to 218p and 210p, whilst top price per head
was £1531 for 2 AA steers entered by J K & T Rigby. The
overall average per head realised £1020 with an average
weight of 575kg.
More Cattle are required each week, please contact us with
your entries so that we can inform prospective buyers of the
types of cattle that will be forward.
With a fluctuating degree of activity over the Christmas
holiday period, it is difficult to ascertain a realistic picture of
trade. However, reports still suggest that beef sales remain
subdued on the back of high prices and that with supplies on
offer adequately matching demand, any upwards pressure on
price has largely dissipated. Should colder weather arrive,
this has the potential to stimulate better demand. However
processors are likely to remain cautious, ensuring supplies
match their retail orders. With prices failing to improve in
the run up to Christmas and some plants reported to be
closed for an extended period of time, In the last week of
December, the all prime average was almost unchanged
compared with the last uninterrupted week before
Christmas. Despite the end of year trend having been
contrary to seasonal expectations, prime cattle average
prices are still up 5% since the turn of 2013.
For vendors thinking that prices are extremely low at the
moment please view the below chart to analyse previous
prices over the past 3years.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
FARM ASSURANCE
Due to the Farm assurance body unable to give us a real time
database or actual up to date information on your assurance status
we rely on YOU the producers to give us the correct information.
Therefore if you present your cattle as farm assured when they are
not this is a misdescription and you are representing your cattle
fraudulently.
When the animal gets to the abattoir they have specific outlets for
these animals and often don’t for nonfarm assured stock so they
deduct massively. This is due to the time and loss of animal to the
batch that was bought for a specific job.
They cannot be returned from an abattoir therefore you are in their
hands. The deduction could be £150.
PLEASE GIVE US THE CORRECT INFORMATION
STORE CATTLE
Every Friday
(To commence after the sale of the beef approximately 12.30pm)
Prices Peaked at £745 or 139.3p
9 A very disappointing but a seasonal entry. Vendors are
always cautious to sell not knowing the prices after the
Christmas and New Year holidays.
To set your mind at ease the trade for all types of store cattle
is extremely good, considering the uncertainty of beef cattle
trade. The entry was made up of Holstein Friesian and
Shorthorn Steers. Top price was taken today by a pair of
24mo Holstein Friesian Steers from R J Hale realising £745
at 535kg, others shown by P Wakeling made £635 (22 mo)
at 485kg and (28mo) £525 at 410kg.
More Cattle are required each week. Please contact our
auctioneers who will be pleased to market them for you.

OVERDUE T.B. Tests and
Cross Compliance Reductions
With effect from 1st January 2014, DEFRA is
strengthening the financial penalties to be applied
on Farmers who have overdue surveillance or
“check” T.B. Tests. The AHVLA will be
providing the R.P.A. with details of all farmers
who have overdue (one day or more) tests. The
R.P.A. will then apply a cross compliance
reduction to the affected farmer’s CAP Scheme
(SPS and Rural Development) payments.
The severity of reduction applied will depend on
how long the T.B. Test is overdue. In general, the
following will apply:- T.B. Test overdue by 1-10 days – 1% Reduction.
- 11-30 days – 3% Reduction.
- More than 30 days – 5% Reduction
If however the cross compliance breach is felt to
have been caused intentionally, more severe
reductions may be applied.

Don’t get caught out by slurry Compliance
Laws
Up to 50% of Livestock producers in Nitrate Vulnerable
Zones (NVZs) could still be non-compliant with slurry
storage requirements brought into force last year, according
to the Environment Agency.
As of 1st January 2012, cattle producers were required to
have five months’ storage and pig producers, six.
“Time is ticking and the longer you leave it, the more likely
you will get caught”.
Failure to comply is a criminal offence and could result in
reductions in Single Farm Payment as well as prosecution
and a fine, which could be as much as £10,000 in a
Magistrates Court.
“In some cases there may be ways to reduce the amount of
slurry produced – by limiting the amount of rainwater
entering the slurry store, for example. However in a lot of
cases, investing in storage may be the only option.”
The first step is to assess how much slurry is being produced
over the storage period and how much is dirty water. Dirty
water can be spread during the closed period, whereas slurry
cannot, so separating off this water can save on storage
requirements.
As soon as water runs into slurry it is classed as slurry and
cannot be spread.
Ways to reduce slurry storage requirements include:
* Put drains in to allow dirty water to be segregated.
* Consider putting a roof over the collecting yard.
* Fix guttering to stop water entering slurry systems.
* Reducing stock numbers, or using straw yards as muck
will be classed as F.Y.M. which can be spread during the
closed period.

information.
