Position
Crikvenica is located in Kvarner Bay in the Adriatic Sea. Its good traffic connections (mainland,
sea, air) is just one of the preconditions why tourism began developing here more than one
century ago. The Crikvenica area can be easily reached from many towns throughout Central
Europe. The island of Krk also hosts Rijeka Airport, only twenty kilometres from Crikvenica.
Climate
Crikvenica is sheltered from strong winds and this favourable position gives the local climate a
combination of Mediterranean and continental features. The average temperature in winter is
ca. 9 °C, and in summer around 23 °C.
The sea air is noted for its cleanliness and for containing dispersed trace elements. A salinity of 4
% and continuous currents from south-east to north-west make the seawater here particularly
clear. Average sea temperatures in summer reach from 23 °C in June to 27 °C in July and August.
A look in the past
The best-known map of the Roman Empire, the Tabula Peutingeriana from the 3 rd century AD,
indicates the position of a station in the northern part of the Liburnian coast between Tarsatica
(today, Rijeka) and Senia (Senj). This station, marked on the map as Ad Turres, had a military
garrison that protected the entire local area and the important Roman road that connected the
north of Italy (the town of Aquileia), through Tergesta (Triest) and Tarsatica (Rijeka), with
Dalmatia.
In the area of Ad Turres at the turn of the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD was the
workshop of Sextus Metilius Maximus with facilities for producing ceramic items.
The history of Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo and Selce was closely intertwined with the
development of the nearby fertile valley of Vinodol and its medieval fortified towns of Drivenik,
Grižane and Bribir. During the Middle Ages, each of these towns had its own harbour on the
coast, which led to the development of fishing villages around them. The stone houses were
built in a very specific way, characterised by vaults and small courtyards enclosed by high stone
walls. Under the Frankopan rule, the free citizens of the towns in the Vinodol area compiled the
Vinodol Law, the first Croatian legal document. This was in 1288, at a time when many parts of
Europe were still regarded as barbarian.
The Crikvenica area also produced many skilled fishermen, and the beginning of the 20th
century saw the rapid rise of tourism as the primary economic activity.
A new era of social and economic prosperity began in 1993 with the establishment of
the Town of Crikvenica as a local government within the independent Republic of Croatia.
CRIKVENICA
Before the area of the present town became populated, people lived in the hinterland, around
Kotor on a nearby hill. The name Kotor comes from the Latin name Ad turres, which was
translated as "kod tor" (at the towers) by the Croats after their arrival. The parish of Kotor used
to be part of the small medieval town of Grižane. Local people engaged in agriculture, livestock
breeding and fishing, and learned to grow vines from the Roman people domiciled here. In
1225, the noble family of Frankopan came into possession of the Vinodol parish and continued
to rule the area until the Croatian noblemen Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan were
executed in Wiener Neustadt in 1671.
In 1412, Nikola IV Frankopan renovated the old church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin
Mary, built a monastery, and gave it to the Pauline monks, which was confirmed by a deed of
donation in which the name of Crikvenica was first time mentioned in an official document. In
the following centuries, until the Pauline order was abolished in 1786, Paulists, also sometimes
known as the white friars because of their white habits, played an important role in almost all
domains of life of local people.
The former Pauline church preserved many works of art and traces of renewals from
different style periods. These all attest to the devotion of the Paulists and local people to the
Virgin Mary, who had been worshipped in the Dubračina area from the early Middle Ages.
Major settlement of Crikvenica as we know it today started in the 17th century,
especially in 1776 after fire devastated a great part of Kotor. Among the destroyed buildings was
the parish church of St. Simon, so the center of the parish was relocated to Crikvenica. This was
a period when the Ottomans and Venetians are no longer any threat, and so the life along the
coast becomes much safer. But due to the lack of arable land, people from Crikvenica soon
started turning more towards the sea and quickly gained a reputation as the best fishermen in
the northern Adriatic.
In the mid-19th century, local people started emigrating to other continents, and for
their accomplishments and innovations the group of fishermen who settled in San Pedro and
Seattle become famous. People from Crikvenica were also widely known as skilled stonemasons
and bricklayers.
At the end of the 19th century, Crikvenica was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A
period of intense tourism development - especially health tourism - followed the construction of
the first wooden swimming baths in 1888 and the hotels Therapia (1895) and Miramare (1906).
Over time, as its reputation for tourism continued to grow, Crikvenica became one of the
leading tourist destination on the Adriatic and a popular destination for many generations of
visitors.
DRAMALJ
In the beginning, Dramalj was a fishing harbour surrounded by olive groves owned by people
who lived in the valley of Tribalj. It was first mentioned at the beginning of the 18th century,
when it was permanently populated and known as Zagorje-Dramalj. The settlement formed and
began to grow around the small church of St. Helen, which was renovated and expanded at the
beginning of the 19th century. The church was built in the place of an old chapel, which had been
Baroqued and expanded in the 18th century, when Dramalj was a chaplaincy of the parish of
Belgrad. In 1796, a famous artist from Rijeka, Giuseppe Capovilla, made a marble altar for this
church.
Construction of the first tourist accommodation facilities began between the two world
wars. Over the following years, Dramalj grew into a tourist destination that particularly appeals
to weekenders and holidaymakers.
JADRANOVO
The oldest preserved traces of human settlements here date back to the Early Stone Age (65004000 BC).
In the Early Iron Age, the cove of Lokvišće in Jadranovo was used as a shelter and a
harbour for the Drivenik fort. Archaeological research in recent years in the cove of Lokvišće has
revealed traces of a more ancient archaeological layer with remains of items from the period
between the end of the 2nd century BC and mid-1st century BC.
A large number of broken amphoras indicates that wine and oil were produced in the
area. In the Middle Ages, Jadranovo was known as Sveti Jakov (St. Jacob) and was a coastal
property and harbour of Drivenik Castle and Municipality. At the end of the 18th century people
immigrate and establish several hamlets in the surroundings of the old church of St. Jacob. The
new center of the parish was developed around the renovated and expanded church of St.
Jacob.
Most people from Sveti Jakov made their living from fishing, predominantly tuna fishing,
but some of them were also skilled bricklayers.
In the 17th century, the tuna lookout posts around Crikvenica and in Selce were owned
by administrators of the Zrinski noble family estates, but later these lookout posts were
managed by various tenants. The only preserved tuna lookout post in the Crikvenica area is
located in Jadranovo.
The first tourists came here in the 1930s. Since then, Jadranovo has developed into a
popular tourist destination with many regular guests. Jadranovo today includes several
scattered hamlets (Ivani, Kloštar, Katun, Neriz, Smokovo, Šiljevica etc.), and has managed to
preserve its identity and coastal village charm despite the newly built properties and tourism
development.
SELCE
The oldest traces of human habitats in the Selce area were found on the nearby hill of Sv. Juraj
(St. George). The early Romanesque church on the Sv. Juraj hill-fort was originally an early
Byzantine guard-house.
The advantages of a natural harbour and the beautiful landscape of the local area were
also appreciated by the Romans. The amphorae that were found in the cove of Jasenova south
of Selce attest to the existence of an ancient port here; there was also a larger settlement in
Roman times whose name remains unknown to this day. In the 13th century, Selce, as part of the
Old Croatian municipality of Bribir, came into the possession of the Frankopan noble family. Due
to its position in a naturally sheltered cove, Selce gained importance as the venue for accepting
and handling of goods and played an increasingly important role in trade. In 1572, Selce and
almost the entire Vinodol estate was taken over by the Zrinski family. They encouraged trade by
land and sea routes, which led to a more intense development of the trade harbour in Selce.
Local people traditionally engaged in vine and olive growing, sheep breeding and tuna fishing.
Olives were processed in three olive mills - toč. In addition to fishing, people from Selce in the
19th century also engaged in sea-faring and trade so at the end of the century, there were ca.
twenty large sailing ships for the transport of wine, oil and other goods.
At the end of the 19th century in construction is one of the first public baths in Selce and
the first accommodation facilities were put in order for visitors, marking the beginning of
hospitality and tourism here, which over time became the town's main business.
Juraj Julije Klović
Julije Klović, or Don Giulio Clovio de Croatia (1498-1578), was a great artist of the late
renaissance period and the leading exponent of the European miniature. He was born in the
small village of Grižane in the Vinodol area of Crikvenica's hinterland. He spent most of his life
abroad, working for popes and cardinals, kings and dukes. Upon the order of his patrons, he
illuminated numerous manuscripts, missals, breviaries and prayer books. He also produced a
large number of drawings and graphics. Several self-portraits are also attributed to him. In 1546,
after nine years of effort, he finished his masterpiece, the Officium Virginis or Časoslav Farnese
for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese.
Although art history makes no record of his youth and early schooling, local tradition of
his birthplace says that he was a talented boy who obtained first knowledge of painting in
Crikvenica's Pauline monastery. When he was eighteen years old, he went to Venice and then to
Rome, Mantua and Buda, but he retained vivid memories of his homeland of Vinodol through
his entire life, and used these motives in his genial miniatures.
Klović died in Rome in 1578 and was buried in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli. His
grave is close to Michelangelo's statue of Moses. The inscription on his tombstone says that
here lies Julije Klović from Croatia.
In Crikvenica, in the roofed passage leading to the Church of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary is a permanent exposition dedicated to Juraj Julije Klović.
What to see
CRIKVENICA
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest retained church in
Crikvenica. Together with the former Pauline monastery in its immediate vicinity, it represents
the old part of the town. Nikola IV Frankopan had it built in 1412.
The Church of St. Anthony of Padua - The foundation stone for this church was laid in 1934.
The church was consecrated in 1939, but the impressive 35 m-high bell tower was finished in
the first decade of the 21st century.
The Russian Orthodox Church was built in 1924. on the initiative of Russians who had fled
toCrikvenica after the October Revolution. The church is dedicate to St. Nicholas and was
constructed in the typical style of Russian church architecture. It has been closed for many
years.
Zvonko Car (1913-1982) was a student of the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and the
creator of many valuable works of art. These include the stone statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary
in front of the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the bust of Juraj
Julije Klović-Croata in Drivenik, the bust of the writer Vladimir Nazor, the bronze statue of the
Maiden with the Seagull in Opatija, the Hygeia statue in front of Crikvenica Town Library...
A monument to the prominent politician, founder of the Croatian Peasant Party and publicist
Stjepan Radić (1871-1928) is located in the park that bears his name in the center of Crikvenica.
The bronze bust of Stjepan Radić is a work by the sculptor Zvonko Car.
Vladimir Nazor (1876-1949) was a great Croatian writer, the first president of the Croatian
parliament after liberation in 1945, and manager of the Children's Home in Crikvenica between
1920 and 1930. A flower-shaped stone monument dedicated to Vladimir Nazor is located in the
park of the Hotel Kaštel.
A stone memorial book naming the people from Crikvenica who were killed in World War Two,
a monument to the partisans and a memorial tomb are located in the Park of the Fallen Soldiers
in the center of Crikvenica.
In Stjepan Radić Park are monuments to Nikola Car-Črni (1910 -1942), national hero and one of
the initiators of the anti-fascist struggle in Vinodol, and the anti-fascists Dr. Ivan Sobol (18851941) and Franjo Car (1921-1941).
The bronze statue of a fisherman , a work by the sculptor Zvonko Car, is locted in Crikvenica
harbour to commemorate the fishermen of Crikvenica.
The Sundial , awarded by the Croatian Tourist Association to the best tourist destination in the
1970s, was won by Crikvenica in 1977. It is located in Stjepan Radić Park.
An interesting and original fish sculpture , created by the architect and painter from Crikvenica,
Zdravko Gržičić, can be seen in the center of Crikvenica. This fine example of the sculptor's work
symbolises the strong link that local people have with the sea.
Olive Mill - Toš , located in Frankopanska Street, is a reminder of the past times when people
from Crikvenica tended olive groves in the surrounding areas and on the island of Krk.
The weather station was founded in 1900. It is located in Stjepan Radić Park and continuously
records temperature and other meteorological data. It is a valuable part of the local historical
and cultural heritage.
Kalvarija (Calvary) , a hill on the top of Jurišićeva Street, is a religious monument and a
viewpoint. In 1895, a statue of Christ was built here.
The Aquarium is located in the center of Crikvenica. In its pleasant ambience of ca. 200 m 2 live
more than hundred fish species from the Adriatic Sea (moray, dogfish, red scorpionfish, dusky
grouper etc.), ca. fifty tropical fish species (angelfish, clownfish, blowfish, zebrafish etc.) and
several freshwater fish species, of which the most interesting are piranha and neonfish.
DRAMALJ
After 1812, the Church of St. Helen was built on the spot of an old chapel, which had been
Baroqued and expanded in the 18th century, when Dramalj was a chaplaincy of the parish of
Belgrad. In 1796, a famous artist from Rijeka, Giuseppe Capovilla, made a marble altar for this
church. Mate Balas, the parish priest at that time, used his own money and the contributions of
his parishioners to initiate construction of the new church. The interior of the church was
decorated in the 19th century: the pulpit in 1837, and the main altar in 1845.
JADRANOVO
The oldest cultural monument in Jadranovo is the archaeological site of Lokvišće which has the
remains of several ancient buildings. Apart from this archaeological site, the cove of Lokvišće is
noted for the balneological qualities of its natural medicinal mud.
The Church of St. Jacob the Apostle was built in the first decade of the 19th century. Based on
available documents and the overall appearance of the church, it can be assumed that it was
built in several phases. The chapel of St. Jacob the Hermit was constructed first. The nave of the
church was added in 1812 due to the effort of Father Mate Balas. The Church of St. Jacob was
built of stone in the Romanesque style.
The wooden statue of St. Jacob , patron saint of the village, is more than 350 years old and is
placed on the main altar. Apart from this statue, there are also the statues of Saints Fabian and
Sebastian and Saints Peter and Paul in the middle of the altar.
The old tuna lookout post symbolises the local tradition of fishing.
SELCE
Parish Church of St. Catherine - The church was built in 1888. The main marble altar is the work
of the famous master from Rijeka, Pietro Rizzi. The painter Giovanni Fumi from Venice, created
the painting of St. Catherine, located above the tabernacle. The ceiling in the sanctuary was
painted in 1910 by Ferdinand Ludwig from Senj. The organ and the baroque stone baptistery,
which is now located beneath the choir, were transferred here from the old church. This church
also holds a baroque reliquary of St. Catherine.
Chapel of St. Catherine - This little church, located in a small, isolated park, is thought to date
back to the pre-Romanesque period. In the 15th century it was already rather dilapidated. After
renovation in 1498, it was consecrated anew by the bishop of Modruš.
Chapel of St. Joseph - This was originally the sanctuary of the baroque single-nave church of St.
Catherine. The church altar, the former main altar of the baroque church of St. Catherine, was
made by Jacopo Businello and Antonio Capovilla. Their work was influenced by the Venetian
masters who had built several baroque gold altars in this area.
Chapel of Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian - Located outside the village, near the crossing of
the main coastal road and the road to Bribir, this chapel is dedicated to the two patron saints
offering protection from plague and cholera. It was built in the mid-19th century in a historicist,
neo-baroque style.
Chapel of St. George - It is assumed that the oldest part of this church was built in the preRomanesque period (9th - 11th centuries AD) on the spot of a Late Antiquity military guardhouse.
It is dedicated to St. George, the most popular medieval saint, who is often connected to the
pre-Christian pagan tradition of Green George, which symbolises the arrival of spring.
Selce Library - The Public Reading Room in Selce, forerunner of the present library, was
established in 1873. The library today hosts two valuable collections: the first is the legacy of
Ivan Lončarić Papić (the Younger), a chronicler and prominent personality from Selce, and the
other is the collection of Dr. Vinko Antić, which among other items includes material about the
great Croatian writer Janko Polić Kamov.
Olive mill (Toč) - The last olive mill in Selce was built using stones from the nearby Roman
ruins, probably in the 18th century. It consists a monolithic stone wheel, a press for crushing the
olives, stone vessels for the oil, and various wooden vessels. Today this is an interesting and
valuable monument to the local tradition of olive-growing. The building with its completely
preserved equipment has long been an art gallery.
All water sources in the area are locally known as polača . The last of these with a dedicated
washing area is located beneath the church of St. Catherine and represents an interesting
example of traditional local architecture. On the wall next to the source is a mosaic by the
painter Hajrudin Kujundžić, representing a woman from Selce in folk costume.
Crikvenica Town Museum
The Crikvenica Town Museum is located in Preradovićeva Street in the very center of the town.
The museum collects material and immaterial heritage from the areas of Crikvenica, Dramalj,
Jadranovo and Selce, and then categorises it and divides into individual categories. The items
are collected through field research, donations and purchases, and are all kept in the museum's
storerooms. At the moment, the Crikvenica Town Museum includes basic collections of
archaeology, natural history, cultural history and fishing.

Did you know?
The first pension in Crikvenica, the Bedenk, was opened in 1887.
Ivan Skomerža, a prominent fisherman and wealthy merchant, built the first hotel in Crikvenica
in 1891. Named the Archduchess Clotilde, this hotel was located in today's pharmacy building,
right in the center of town. The hotel soon became the center of Crikvenica's social life.
Famous personalities on the Crikvenica Riviera
At turn of the 19th to the 20th century many distinguished personalities and aristocrats, visited
Crikvenica Riviera, including Archduke Joseph Habsburg and family, King Oscar of Sweden, King
George of Greece, King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, Queen Mother Hasana II of Morocco and many
others.
Many artists have found inspiration for their works while staying in Crikvenica Riviera.
These include the French actor and chansonnier Yves Montand, the Croatian writers Miroslav
Krleža, Marija Jurić-Zagorka and Vladimir Nazor, the opera star Ljiljana Molnar-Talajić and many
others.
Where to eat
A TRADITION OF FLAVOURS AND SCENTS DATING BACK MORE THAN A CENTURY...
The traditional coastal cuisine of Kvarner embraces a true richness of flavours. These are based
on healthy natural ingredients in a way that perfectly matches the tourist offer of Crikvenica, the
town that has been a health tourist destination for more than a century. The menus of some of
Crikvenica's hotels and restaurants include, among their more popular dishes, also those
prepared in traditional ways. Crikvenica's ca. thirty typical dishes reflect some of the distinctive
characteristics of this area, characterised by the scents of the sea, fresh air, pure soil, and the
curative Mediterranean herbs that grow here. These unique combinations of hot and cold,
sweet and salty, recall some long forgotten recipes. In addition to the usual fish and meat
specialities prepared in a variety of ways, vegetarian dishes, fast food and gourmet recipes,
Crikvenica Riviera offers something truly unique - a selection of traditional dishes that you
simply cannot taste anywhere else. These include original fish recipes - Crkveniške rupice, Slani
vinćoli na svetojelenski, Prežganica z baškoton na jakovarski roux soup, Frankopan cake or
Selački puhanci fritters. We invite you to savour these specialities that will surely satisfy even
the most demanding of gourmets!

Frankopan cake is a typical speciality of the Crikvenica area. It recalls the era when members of
the noble Frankopan family ruled the Vinodol region. The recipe for the cake was reconstituted
at the beginning of the 1990s on the basis of a cookery book from 1686 by the duchess Eleonora
Maria Rosalia von Eggenberg. You can taste the cake in the café of the Hotel International in the
center of Crikvenica.
Where body and soul breathe
Already in the 19th century have been noticed excellent conditions for the development of
health tourism in Crikvenica’s area, especially its beneficial Mediterranean climate and
microclimate, fresh air, clean sea, and beautiful unspoilt natural surroundings. At the turn of the
19th and 20th centuries, two of Crikvenica's large hotels – the Archduke Joseph (today the
Therapia) and the Miramare - were the first to open hydropathic establishments. At that period
are opened a number of health institutions for adults and children (Ladislav's Children's Home,
Czech Colony, Mojmir etc.), and dedicated sanatoriums (Dr. Seidl Sanatorium, Villa Ružica
Teacher's Sanatorium etc.).
The area's Health Commission was established according to the new Law on Health Care
on the 25th March 1906, the same year that Crikvenica was officially declared a climatic health
and sea resort. The Primorka Recovery center for Convalescent Children was opened in the
former building of the Czech Colony in 1953. Then in 1960 the Institute for Adult
Thalassotherapy, for the prevention and rehabilitation of upper and lower respiratory tract
diseases, was opened in the Hotel Therapia.
In 1967, the Institute for Thalassotherapy Crikvenica and the Primorka Recovery center
merged into one hospital, known as Thalassotherapia Crikvenica since 1995. The medical part of
the Thalassotherapia consists of four departments: Department for Children, Department of
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, and the PulmonaryInternal Department. In September 2009, the Polyclinic for Baromedicine OXY was opened
within the Thalassotherapia. The polyclinic focuses on curing various types of disease, speeding
up recovery from sporting injuries or after extreme physical effort, improving physical fitness in
athletes, diving preparation and emergency cases. Of the private health institutes in the area,
particularly important are the Polyclinics Katunar in Crikvenica, which includes a medical clinic
for tourists and offers various specialist services, and the Polyclinics Terme Selce in Selce, which
offers numerous therapeutic and prevention programmes, especially in the fields of physical
medicine and rehabilitation of sport injuries.

Did you know?
In 1900, the Society for the Embellishment of Crikvenica and Surroundings established a
meteorological station, which is today one of the three oldest such stations in Croatia.
In 1910, Czech Marie Steyskalová, with the help of her associate Berta Drgáčova, founded the
Czech Colony in Crikvenica, a health and convalescence center. Until 1948, many Czech and
Slovak children came here for healing and convalescence. The property had its own baths, pool
with warm and cold seawater, play areas, gym, x-ray machine, various devices for physical
therapy, and a laboratory. The center could accommodate about 400 children.
Paradise for romantics and adventurers
The first public wooden swimming baths in Crikvenica were constructed in 1888, marking the
beginning of the era of modern tourism. Over time, more and more attention was given to
maintenance and up-keep of the beaches. Today the beaches of the Crikvenica Riviera are
known for their exceptional beauty, crystal clear seawater, and an abundance of Mediterranean
plants growing alongside well-tended footpaths. Moreover, the beaches are well diversified and
offer a variety of facilities. Long sandy and pebble beaches, numerous peaceful coves and
romantic isolated natural beaches, sport and recreational facilities, children's playgrounds, a
variety of bars and restaurants, and a wide range of cultural and entertainment programmes
that at night turn the beaches into quite magical stages. The beaches of the Crikvenica Riviera
really do have plenty to offer, justifying exactly why this area has often been declared the
Riviera with the best beaches.
Thanks to the high-quality cleanliness of the sea, the beaches in Crikvenica (Balustrada,
Town Beach), Dramalj (Omorika) and Selce (Poli mora, Rokan, pools of the Hotel Varaždin) have
been for several years awarded with the Blue Flag, the well-established European certificate of
excellence.
BEACH FOR THE DISABLED
The Crikvenica Town Beach is accessible to people with disabilities and includes a ramp for
entering the sea and sanitary facilities with the Euroblock locking system.
BEACH FOR PETS
To the delight of animal lovers, in July 2010 Crikvenica got its first beach for pets, which is
located next to the port of Podvorska on top of the pier. In addition to an information board
explaining the rules of behaviour, in 2011 were constructed special canopies offering protection
from direct sunlight. Admission to this beach is free.
A tide of experiences
Through the year, Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo and Selce host a variety of cultural,
entertainment and sporting events, many of them have become traditional but still are getting
better every time. During high season, there are fish, folklore and other traditional festivals all
along this Riviera. Crikvenica and Dramalj are hosts of concerts of men's and women's klape
traditional singing groups from all over Croatia.
AD TURRES DAY
In 2007, Crikvenica started hosting this cultural-educational event as a way of celebrating the
area's rich architectural heritage. The event evokes Roman times in a vivid, picturesque way, so
that visitors can re-experience the atmosphere of ancient Crikvenica. It presents many aspects
of everyday Roman life (clay-processing, clothes, jewellery, hairstyles, perfumes, music, dance,
food and drinks) and traditional crafts (pottery, basket-making, stone masonry, blacksmith's
craft, producing frescoes and mosaics etc.). The festival also includes interesting lectures and
educational workshops for adults and children (making laurel wreaths, painting fabric, filling
amphorae with wine, clay-modelling, making mosaics and drawings with motives from ancient
times, and playing games from that era). Visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy specialities
of the ancient gastronomy prepared to original recipes.
FISHERMEN'S WEEK
Today's Crikvenica wants to attract the attention of new generations to the importance of this
tradition. One small way in which the town pays tribute to fishing, once the most important
activity in the area to which Crikvenica owes its development and very survival, is Fishermen's
Week, a festival that has been going on since 1966. It is also a way to acknowledge the
persistence and endurance of our fishermen ancestors and to thank them for their contribution
in creating the town's identity.
One of the oldest events in the area, Fishermen's Week takes place every year at the
end of August. Over time, the festival included more and more programmes and events, mostly
connected to the sea.
Fishermen's Week includes concerts, performances of theatrical and folklore ensemble,
exhibitions, painting workshops, sporting competitions and other activities. Of particular
interest are the various original gastronomic programmes in which local people prepare
traditional fish dishes for their visitors. Then at midnight of the last day, a fireworks marks the
end of the festival and the arrival of autumn's quieter days.
More information about Fishermen's Week may be found at www.ribarski.net.
CARNIVAL
Sleepy winter months Crikvenica Riviera welcomed cheerful and ready for arrival of carnival. It's
a time for hosting numerous events, typified by the cheerful atmosphere and a great variety of
colourful and imaginatively designed masks. Every year, as they make their way through the
local villages, the carnival's participants sing and bang their drums loudly to chase away the
spirits of winter and to summon spring back to life. Traditionally, masked parties take place on
Saturdays, and tea parties with tombola on Sundays. There are also large carnival parades with
groups from the entire Kvarner area. On Ash Wednesday, local people read "šentenca", a text
criticising the situation of society and making fun of certain events. After that comes the burning
of the Pust - a puppet that gets held responsible for everything that has gone wrong in the
previous year. In recent years, Dramalj has hosted the Summer Carnival at the end of July - an
event aimed at presenting the area's carnival traditions to its summertime visitors. More
information about carnival in Crikvenica can be found at www.maskare.net.
CRIKVENICA SEA GAMES
During the main tourist season, Crikvenica's town swimming pool hosts the Crikvenica Sea
Games - competitions in various sports between teams from Crikvenica and its neighbouring
towns. The games are great fun for everyone and contribute not only to developing the
competitive spirit, but also to strengthening friendship among the competing towns.
TOURISM DAY
Tourism Day is a fifty year old event that takes place in Selce on the 4 th of August because the
first public swimming baths were opened in Selce on the 4th of August 1894. The event involves
a variety of activities, including a gathering on the waterfront with fried fish, local wines and
music, panoramic night sailing in specially decorated boats with lights, and a big fireworks.
THE PADDLES OF JAKOVAR
In this cheerful, energetic and exciting event in Jadranovo, several teams of local men, women
and children row wooden boats from Tunera to the cove of Grabrova and back, urged on all the
way by the beating of drums. Sometimes a paddle gets broken, but this race is all about the
taking part and having fun, not winning. After the race there is a big fishermen's feast, with
plenty of good food on offer.
TUNA PARTY
This event was created with the aim of evoking Jadranovo's past tradition of tuna fishing. It
includes sampling various tuna specialities (salads, spreads, brodetto, grill, etc.) in an ambience
decorated in fishermen's style accompanied by music - a perfect guarantee for great fun and a
most enjoyable atmosphere in the small coastal town of Jadranovo.
LITTORAL NIGHT
This is an entertainment-gastronomic event that takes place in all the Riviera's towns and
includes the presentation of ecological and natural products (home-made cheeses, olive oil,
brandies, wine...), authentic souvenirs, traditional customs, folks dances and songs of the local
area.
ŠILO-CRIKVENICA SWIMMING MARATHON
The Šilo-Crikvenica swimming marathon has been joining these two towns together since 1910.
From that time, it has grown into a unique sport event attracting recreational and professional
swimmers. The international swimming competition, between Šilo on the island of Krk and
Crikvenica on the coast, took place for the first time in 1910, when it was organised by the
Health and Tourism Commission. Since then, the marathon has always taken place on the 14th or
15th of August on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the patron saint of
Crikvenica.
FEASTS OF PATRON SAINTS
Each village along the Crikvenica Riviera has always celebrated the feast of its own patron saint.
Dramalj celebrates the feast of St. Helen on the 22nd of May, Jadranovo, St. Jacob on the 25th of
July, Crikvenica, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the 15th of August and Selce, St.
Catherine on the 25th of November. Every year, Crikvenica organizes a festival with cultural,
entertainment and sport events which takes place during the week when the town of Crikvenica
celebrates its central public holiday (14th of August), known as Day of town Crikvenica.
The Feast of St. Jacob, locally known as Jakovlja, the central summer event in Jadranovo,
takes place in July, a few days before and on the day of the feast of St. Jacob, the patron saint of
this town.
FRANKOPAN DAYS
In 2012, Crikvenica celebrated a round-number birthday. It has been exactly 600 years since
Duke Nikola IV Frankopan ordered a construction of a monastery near a crumbling Church of
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and gave it as a present to the monks of St. Paul the
Hermit (Paulinians) on 14th August 1412. The Frankopan Days, a central whole-day celebration
will be held on 28-29 June. A rich and imaginative programme will tell a story of a historical
period which left an important and indelible mark on the area of Crikvenica. Every corner of
Crikvenica shall introduce to visitors, in its own way, the world of the Frankopans and show
them all the magic and secrets of the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages fair, old trades will be
presented, a former way of trading, a mint for coins and numerous other interesting things
which will entice a shining spark in the eyes of a modern observer. A special experience will be a
fight of knights, a tournament in archery, appearances of Middle Ages entertainers, jugglers,
stilt walkers, clowns, workshops in archery and fence, a miniature workshop, a procession of
Middle Ages troupes and Middle Ages round-about for children. Players, singers and actors shall
reveal, by music, words and movement, how people used to entertain themselves, how they
mingled together and enjoyed themselves in the Middle Ages. A camp with Middle Ages cuisine
will reveal all the richness of former tastes and scent of dishes and beverages. In an educative
and entertaining way, the Frankopan Days shall merge the tradition of the Middle Ages and
modern Crikvenica.
ETHNO SELCE
Ethno Selce represents Selce in a traditional setting which may be seen from the name of the
event. With rich presentation of cultural heritage, entertainment for visitors and preservation of
tradition, Ethno Selce brings an abundance of positive energy and warmth to the streets of this
coastal town. The combination of irresistible charming ambience, hospitality and autochthonic
products and original customs is a guarantee for your contentment and satisfaction. The fair of
traditional and ecological products, old trades, traditional dishes, a presentation of village and
coastal songs and dances, national costumes and old national customs, such as straw milling or
washing of laundry in a traditional way, shall present an authentic Selce and introduce visitors to
a special world.
MELODIES WITH A SEA TASTE
Owing to a calm and relaxing natural ambience by the sea and cherishing of a traditional musical
expression, Dramalj and Jadranovo have the honour to become a hosts of a musical event
Melodies with a Sea Taste. A discrete sound of sea waves and a gentle breeze are ideal
preconditions to enjoy unique musical interpretations of top quality musicians in a romantic
atmosphere in Dramalj port Pazdehova and waterfront Mulina in Jadranovo. Melodies with a
Sea Taste is a painstakingly combined musical mosaic, composed of renowned musical melodies,
chansons, excerpts form operas and operettas, classics which have been enchanting us for
decades, as well as numerous musical hits which may righteously be called eternal and
unrepeatable.
ADRIA ADVENT MARATHON
When the year ends for the most of marathon runners, and Europe is putting on winter cloths
and skis, a sunny Crikvenica is preparing a real sport treat entitled Adria Event Marathon. The
marathon takes place every first Advent in the year. Although young, Adria Advent Marathon
showed at its premiere in 2011, a large potential and peculiarity, gathered and united marathon
runners from the entire world who, for the first time in the history of Crikvenica, run the total of
42.195 meters by the sea. Without the fear that they will taste the pleasure of their stay only
half-heartedly, those who are less enduring, amateurs and citizens may try themselves in a
semi-marathon, a race of 21.975 meters. An impressive scene of the race by the sea, pleasurable
mingling, a passion for sports and recreation, as well as a challenge to participate in, are only a
few of the reasons to visit Crikvenica at the time the marathon takes place, which is included in
the competition of Croatia for road and mountain running. Further information may be found at
the official page of Adria Advent Marathon: http://www.adria-marathon.eu/.
Did you know?
In 2013, Crikvenica celebrates 125 years since the construction of the first wooden public sea
baths. This event is today remembered as the beginning of tourism in the town. To mark the
125th anniversary of tourism, Crikvenica hosts a series of various events throughout the year.
On the 14th August 2012 Crikvenica celebrated 600th anniversary of the first written record of
the name Crikvenica in an official document. The document was the deed of donation in which
Duke Nikola IV Frankopan gave the castle and church next to the stream of Dubračina to the
Pauline monks.
Thanks to the efforts of Nikola Miko Šnjarić, from 1952 until the 1970s, Crikvenica regularly
hosted Speedway races. In 1956 it hosted the World Speedway Zone Championship - for which
it commissioned the first guidebook of the town to be published after World War Two.
Carnival in Selce includes some very specific traditions, such as the threshing and burning of
straw. If the smoke blow towards the sea, it will be a good year for fishing, and if it blows inland,
it will be a fertile year on land. Another tradition involves the making of a straw puppet known
as the Pust - if it gets stolen before being presented to the public, there will be no carnival for
the next seven years.
Passion for movement
Crikvenica Riviera and the Vinodol hinterland offer plenty of opportunities for relaxing amid
beautiful natural scenery in a pleasant Mediterranean climate, as well as for pursuing many
recreational or sporting activities. The area's wide range of facilities for sports at sea or on land,
especially those designed for children and for the organisation of competitions, will delight all
those who love the healthy way of life and who enjoy taking active holidays through the year.
The area's sporting facilities combined with the beneficial local climate make Crikvenica Riviera
ideal for athletes in training for competition.

approximately 8 km long and 1.5 m wide. A walk along the path takes in several interesting
sights:
1. The Badanj fort (60 meters above sea level) - the oldest part of the historical and cultural
heritage in the immediate hinterland of Crikvenica, dating back to Late Antiquity.
2. "Pod veli kamik" ("Below the great rock") - the former drinking water source that used to
serve the people of Sopaljska and at the same time, this was Crikvenica's first water supply
line, built in 1890.

From guests to good friends
During high season, visitors to Crikvenica Riviera have the opportunity to sail, fish, play “boće”
or participate in a variety of events organised by their hosts, many of whom are members of
local sports clubs in Crikvenica, Dramalj, Jadranovo or Selce. Taking part in these activities
together has often marked the beginning of long friendships between visitors and their hosts.

The eyes of Vinodol
The Vinodol area is dotted with beautiful natural sights. Particularly attractive are the six
viewpoints that are called "The Eyes of Vinodol". These viewpoints offer a unique experience
and magnificent views. When implementing the points, particular attention was given to
protection of the natural environment with the aim of preserving the distinctive natural features
of the local landscape.
Three viewpoints are located within the Municipality of Vinodol. These are Mahavica
above the village of Drivenik, Pridva above the villages of Grižane and Tribalj, and Slipica above
the village of Bribir. The other three viewpoints are located in the area of the Town of Novi
Vinodolski. These are Gradina above the village of Ledenice, Sviba above Sviba, and Kuk at
Krmpote.
Did you know?
THE VINODOL LAW is one of the oldest legal documents in Europe. It was compiled by the
representatives of nine towns and municipalities in the Vinodol area (Grobnik, Trsat, Bakar,
Hreljin, Drivenik, Grižane, Bribir, Ledenice and Novigrad – today Novi Vinodolski). These
representatives met in the Frankopan castle of Novigrad on the 6th of January 1288 to draw up a
list of the old legal traditions of the Principality of Vinodol. The aim of compiling this law was to
protect serfs from their feudal lords, and especially from their juridical power. In 1996, the
Croatian Institute for Human Rights was established in the very same room in Novi Vinodolski in
which the ancient law had been signed. The manuscript of the Vinodol Law is today kept in the
National and University Library in Zagreb.

Interesting facts
THE CRIKVENICA AMPHORA
Crikvenica is a town of impressive cultural heritage that dates back to Roman times. This has
been confirmed by recent archaeological exploration of the Ad Turres settlement, located on
the site of today's Crikvenica. Among other findings, which all attest to life in this area around
the 1st century AD, particularly worth mentioning is a unique type of Roman amphora, known as
the Crikvenica Amphora after the location where it was discovered. "Adriatic Flat-Bottomed
Amphora of the Crikvenica Type" is the official name of this special type of amphora, which was
first discovered at the Ad Turres archaeological site, and whose type/uniqueness has been
confirmed by the relevant experts. The Crikvenica Amphora is of a flat-bottomed Roman type
and represents a local variant of the Forlimpopoli amphora type that was manufactured in Italy
in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Due to the many formal characteristics that distinguish this from
the Forlimpopoli type, it has been concluded that the amphorae from Crikvenica were indeed an
original product of Ad Turres. They were manufactured in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD in the
large ceramic workshop that was discovered at the site of the present town sports hall in
Crikvenica. Today, two thousand years later, the production of these amphorae has been started
anew, as small replicas that hve become a true authentic souvenir of Crikvenica.
CRIKVENICA CERAMIC FURNACE
The largest of the six ceramic furnaces whose remains were discovered in Crikvenica is one of
the best-preserved furnaces from the period of the Roman Empire. In 2011, a new ceramic oven
was constructed using ancient materials and technologies. This oven was fired several times,
and each time the entire process took two days: the oven was first continuously heated up to
the temperature of 800°C for 8 hours, and then cooled for approximately twenty hours. The
items could be then removed from the furnace. The replica of the Crikvenica furnace is located
near the promenade alongside the small river of Dubračina in Crikvenica and can be visited at
any time of the day.
VRTARE MALE CAVE
Vrtare male cave in Dramalj represents one of the richest palaeontological sites in Croatia. It
attests to the life in prehistory and the Late Pleistocene, that is, the end of the long period of the
Ice Age, in which present man emerged.
The cave is ca. forty metres deep and contains a variety of fossil remains of long extinct
animals and a great biodiversity of cave organisms. Palaeontological research has confirmed the
presence of bones and teeth of the elephant, wild rhino, aurochs/bison, horse, fallow deer,
chamois, cave lion, cave bear, bear, and wolf. There are also numerous remains of small
mammals and birds. The cave has been given preliminary protection by listening in the Croatian
Register of Nature Monuments.
KOTOR
Before populating the present Crikvenica area, local people used to live in Kotor on a nearby hill,
which was first mentioned as early as the 13th century. The Kotor parish was part of the
medieval town of Grižane, and seems to have had some very devout residents, going by the
number of churches here, some of which were linked to monastic brotherhoods (St. Simon, St.
Trinity, Most Holy Body, St. Mary, St. George and St. Nicholas). In 1776, a big fire devastated
Kotor, causing most people migrate to the coast.
BADANJ FORT
In the immediate vicinity of Crikvenica, alongside the stream of Dubračina, is the rather small
yet strategically very well positioned fort of Badanj, the oldest memorial of medieval
fortification architecture in the Vinodol region. The original name of this hilltop fort, which was
abandoned after a big earthquake in the 14th century, remains unknown. Connected to the
history of Badanj is the legend of a buried treasure which is guarded by a large snake. The first
Croatian settlers to this area heard about this legend from the natives who lived here before
they arrived. The snake is an Old Mediterranean divinity symbol, and legends of buried treasure
are quite common in the areas of Crikvenica Riviera and Vinodol.
