Generation No. 1
1. JAMES1 SIMMONS was born 1615, and died Unknown. He married SUSAN (SIMMONS) UNKNOWN. She

Notes for JAMES SIMMONS:
SIMMONS IN ENGLAND
Historical records consulted indicate the Simmons family lived in Ullesthorpe, County Leicester, England.
The Arms was first granted to William Simmons of that place.
Early American records indicate that a member of the Simmons family came to America and settled in
Boston, Massachusetts about 1679.
Another descendant of the Simmons family settled on a large grant of land in Summerville, South Carolina,
and married a daughter of a rice planter in Santee, near Georgetown, North Carolina.

From Peggy Hill, February, 2003:
"It appears that two of James's sons, James and Thomas, stayed in the Tanner's Creek area, while Robert,
Henry and William moved to the south part of the country, in the Blackwater area, and obtained land
grants. It also appears that each of the three sons, Robert, Henry and William, had a son named John, as
there were three John Simmons in the vicinity. Two can definitely be traced to Henry and William, so I
guess the third is Robert's. This third John appears to have been born ca 1675, married someone named
Elizabeth about 1700, received a land grant for 170 acres in 1705, died in 1718 (by reference to Will), left
children: Sarah, James, John, Elizabeth and Anne."
See family tree for more information on each.

Residence:
James Simmons went to North Carolina from Blackwater, Princess Anne County, and petitioned for and
received land grants at Edenton on March 12, 1740/41. Several other families from around Blackwater
later moved to the same area where James settled. It appears that James' wife, Providence, and son James
did not go to North Carolina with him. James and Providence sold his inherited land in 1748, showing him
to be from north Carolina and Providence from Princess Anne Co, Virginia. Apparently, Providence and
son James lived near or with James Sr's mother, Elizabeth, until Elizabeth died in 1753. All were
mentioned in Elizabeth's will. Providence and son James still lived in Norfolk Co, Virginia, in 1756.
