PEDIATRIC PULMONARY CENTER (PPC) TUCSON, ARIZONA Nursing Discipline (Long-Term Trainee = Minimum 300 hrs) The PPC provides an opportunity for nurses to develop advanced clinical nursing skills in working with children and infants with special health care needs. Specifically, the training curriculum emphasizes pediatric nursing for chronic respiratory diseases and provides additional experience in nursing support and management techniques for the premature population, unique cultural diversity issues, and exercise issues. Short-term and long-term nursing traineeships for practicing nurses and graduate students are available and may be individualized according to the student’s prior clinical experience to meet programmatic requirements of cooperating institutions. Collaborating institutions include the University Physicians Clinics, the University Medical Center, the University of Arizona College of Nursing, Arizona State University and various community/state healthcare facilities and agencies, such as Child Rehabilitative Services. Phase I Trainees will review core curriculum lectures to receive an overview of pediatric pulmonary diseases as well as clinical nursing lectures/workshops for advanced training of practice guidelines. It is expected that trainees will follow in-patient pediatric pulmonary patients for nursing. In-patient care units include—Pediatric ICU, 3E, 3W, 3NE, and the NICU as appropriate. Trainees will participate in rounds. Phase II Trainees will participate in out-patient clinics (CF, asthma, BPD, general, CRS Neuromuscular disease, etc) and out-reach clinics or community sites as schedule permits. It is expected that a community educational/multi-media project will be completed during this phase. Initiation of a research project and data-gathering will occur as well. Phase III Trainees will attend spring curriculum and complete the on-line modules (Cultural Competency, CITI, Emergency Management). The primary focus of time will be on the completion of the project write-up and the creation of a professional presentation for presentation to the PPC Faculty. . Pediatric Pulmonary Center Nursing Discipline PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS To successfully complete the PPC traineeship in nursing, the nursing trainee will: Clinical 1. Conduct complete sleep apnea assessments, recognize indication for polysomnograph, home monitoring devices, and educate families in appropriate sleep hygiene. 2. Conduct complete asthma assessments and develop comprehensive asthma care plans including medications, devices, and educational components. 3. Participate in Basic Asthma Management Skills course (BAMS). 4. Become familiar with ventilation assistance devices including Bipap/Cpap, Inexsufflator (cough assist) and LTV 950/1000. 5. Become familiar with artificial airway management of tracheostomy tubes. 6. Educate patients and families on airway clearance techniques. 7. Educate patients and families on types of oxygen therapy. 8. Interpret pulmonary function testing results. 9. Interpret chest radiographs (CXR). 10. Recognize need for implanted access devices, gastrotrostomy tube in select populations. 11. Observe bronchoscopy and sweat test. Professionalism: 1. Be professional in both dress and attitude. 2.
