The Stafford County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is proud to present their 2013 King & Queen Scholarship Contest. The King & Queen Scholarship Contest is an opportunity to engage both young men and women in our local community in a program that teaches the significance of scholarship and community service. The Stafford NAACP welcome participants and their families to join our King & Queen program. Our program will provide a curriculum that includes educational, cultural, selfenrichment, and community service activities. Our program will conclude with a King & Queen Scholarship Program. Introduction The Stafford County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is a nonprofit organization, 501(c) 4. Our mission is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination. The NAACP vision is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race. The principal objectives of the Association are To ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of all citizens To achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among the citizens of the United States To remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes To seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights To inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek its elimination To educate persons as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action to secure the exercise thereof, and to take any other lawful action in furtherance of these objectives, consistent with the NAACP's Articles of Incorporation and this Constitution. King & Queen Scholarship Contest Program The Stafford NAACP King & Queen Scholarship Contest was established in an effort to involve the entire community in one of the most important goals of the organization, which is to provide education opportunities through scholarship to students in the area and to help the branch operating expenses so that better service can be provided to the community (e.g., back-to-school and stay-in-school programs). The King & Queen Scholarship Contest consists of programs and activities that support the mission of the NAACP. Each component is strategically planned to integrate relevant challenges, issues, and concerns with practical solutions, techniques, and life skills to enhance development. Civic Engagement 6. Education 7. Health 8. Cultural Events 9. Financial 10. Justice Description The King & Queen Scholarship Contest is a comprehensive introduction to the NAACP and the program. The Stafford NAACP President and its members officially welcome the participants and their parents. The fundraising workshop will teach the participants the most appropriate way to identify, ask, and receive funds from supporters. The workshop will also review the finances and collection of fees form. The program workshops are designed as seminars with formal instruction and/or facilitation to create an exciting cultural, educational, and social experience for the participants. Workshop topics may include civic engagement, education, health, financial, and justice and may include speakers or panelist, interactive team assignments, and take home assignments to build upon workshop lessons. The King & Queen program participants will participate in a community service project with NAACP members. Participants will learn the importance of advocating to improve quality of life through active participation in the community and public service including voting and voter education. The promotion of academic excellence will be explored through scholarships for college, study skills, college life, and motivational learning. The King & Queen participants will learn individual wellness through focused prevention including fitness and healthy eating. The cultural events will provide participants exposure to social and multiethnic experiences. The events will provide unique opportunities for community and interpersonal development. Participants will learn financial literacy, including budgeting, homeownership, and entrepreneurship. The goal is to promote the advocacy for and advance a better public safety system that reduces the reliance on prisons as a means of solving social problems and advances effective law enforcement. King & Queen Competition The winners of the King & Queen Scholarship Contest are determined by a fundraising competition between the participants. The participant who raises the most funds will be placed as the Stafford NAACP King or Queen. The first place winner will then represent the Stafford NAACP Branch and compete at the Virginia State Conference, which is held annually in October. However, all participants will be awarded scholarship funds predetermined by the percentages set by the King & Queen Scholarship Program Committee. See the table below to understand what each participant and winner will receive.
