HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Health Effects:
Acute
Swallowed:
Harmful if swallowed. May cause irritation of mucous membranes in the
mouth, pharynx, oesophagus and gastrointestinal tract. May cause rapid
absorption. After absorption may cause agitation, spasm, nausea, vomiting,
cardiovascular failure, collapse and disturbed electrolyte balance
Eye:
Irritating to eyes. Has caustic effects, tissue damage.
Skin:
Irritating to skin. Has caustic effects, tissue damage.
Inhaled:
Harmful if inhaled. Causes irritation of the mucous membranes, coughing
and dyspnoea.
Chronic
May cause kidney damage
First Aid
Advice
For advise, contact a Poisons Information Centre (Phone eg. Australia 13 11
26; New Zealand 03 4747 000 [Not after May 2005] or 0800 764 766 or a
doctor at once).
Swallowed
If swallowed, Do NOT Induce Vomiting. Rinse mouth with water. Give
plenty of water to drink. Seek medical assistance.
Eyes
If in eyes, hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with running
water. Continue flushing until advised to stop by the Poisons Information
Centre or a doctor, or for at least 15 minutes.
Skin
If skin contact occurs, immediately remove contaminated clothing. Flush skin
under water for 15 minutes. Seek medical assistance.
Inhaled:
Remove victim from exposure to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give
oxygen. Seek medical advice.

Advice to Doctor:
If victim is conscious, give immediately by mouth, a fine suspension in water
of a non toxic calcium compound such as calcium lactate, chalk, plaster or
milk. Large amounts of calcium are required to inactivate oxalate by
precipitating it as the insoluble calcium oxalate salt.
Aggravated Medical Conditions caused by exposure
Long term exposure to oxalic acid solutions, by ingestion, skin absorption
and inhalation is linked to stone formation in the kidney and urinary tract.
Painful abdominal spasms during the passing of the stone and painful and
difficult urination may occur. Secondary products cause damage to kidneys.
PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
Exposure Standards:
TLV-TWA = 1 mg/m3 TLV-STEL = 2 mg/m3.
Engineering Controls:
Provide adequate local exhaust ventilation to maintain exposure levels
below standards.
Personal Protection:
Avoid contact with skin. Avoid breathing dust. Wear full protective clothing
including breathing apparatus/dust mask and protective gloves. Wear
adequate clothing to minimise exposure. Wash thoroughly before eating,
drinking or using the toilet facilities. Apply protective barrier cream on skin.
Hands/Feet - Wear protective gloves, e.g. PVC
Other - Overalls. Barrier Cream. Eyewash unit.
Flammability:
Combustible solid.
SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
Storage and Transport:
Transport or store in a cool, dry area away from direct heat. Keep container
closed tightly when not in use. Avoid contact with alkalis, ammonia, salts of
oxyhalogenic acids, oxidising agents, metals and water/heat.

Spills and Disposal:
Avoid raising dust. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not inhale dusts.
Take up dry. Forward for disposal. Clean up affected area. NO NOT wash
untreated material down the drain or sewer.
Disposal – There are no uniform Regulations for the disposal of chemicals or
residues. Chemical residues generally count as special waste. The disposal
of the latter is regulated through corresponding laws and regulations. We
recommend that you contact either the authorites in charge or approved
waste disposal companies which will advise you on how to dispose of
special waste. Disposal Recycle wherever possible or consult manufacturer
for recycling options.
Consult State Land Waste Management Authority for disposal.
Treat and neutralise with dilute acid at an effluent treatment plant.
Recycle containers, otherwise dispose of in an authorised landfill.

Fire/Explosion Hazard:
Combustible solid. Product may emit hazardous gases or vapours in the
event of a fire. Avoid contact with alkalis, ammonia, salts of oxyhalogenic
acids, oxidising agents, metals and water/heat.
Extinguishing Media – Use powder, foam, water spray or carbon dioxide. Do
not stay in dangerous zone without self-contained breathing apparatus.
Prevent fire-fighting water from entering surface water or ground water.
