Adult events in May to August 2008
Jack the Ripper and the East End opens on 15 May 2008 and the infamous crimes of
1888 have inspired a fantastic range of events; from walks that explore the stories of the
women involved to lunchtime lectures on the slums, philanthropy and migration of
Victorian London. There is also the chance to connect with Docklands past by looking at
the Jewish East End and courses and study days that reveal more about the nature of the
docks, slavery and empire.

Dr Kate Bradley, University of Kent, explores philanthropy - for instance the settlements
and the Salvation Army -and the slums of the Victorian East End.

more about tea, and tasting it. Part of London's Spice Festival.

3pm-4pm - Visit the MiD archives, see original materials on tea drinking and selling tea,
and enjoy a chance to chat to the archivists.

Britain's Jewish community and the campaign to eradicate white slavery
Dr Nicholas Evans, Lecturer in Slavery Studies at the Wilberforce Institute, University of
Hull, will look at London's Jewish community, white slavery and the moral reaction to the
Jack the Ripper murders.

The greatest area of impounded water ever constructed, the Royal Docks formed the
heart of the Port of London for almost 100 years. The area also saw the development of
major industrial concerns in the nineteenth century. This guided tour looks at the
remains of these developments, and surveys the area's modern regeneration. Join Blue
Badge guide Nick Tallentire on consecutive Sundays for a circular tour of the dock system
and Thames side industries.
