Old School Sci-Fi Book and Movie Club, Wednesday, March 4, 6:30 pm, Trustees’ Room: The group meets to
discuss works of science-fiction and view movie adaptations. This month they will discuss A Scanner Darkly by Philip K.
Dick and watch the 2006 movie version starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr, Winona Ryder and Woody Harrelson.

Art Reception for the Newton Camera Club, Wednesday, March 4, 7:00 pm: The joy of photography is what brings
together members of the Newton Camera Club. Their annual print show will be on view in the Main Hall from March 3-30.
The public is welcome to meet the photographers and view the show at this opening reception.
NEW! Minecraft Club, Thursday, March 5, 4:00-5:30 pm, second floor Computer Center: Come play Minecraft with
your friends on the library’s server. We’ll have different challenges each week. Don’t have an account? No problem, use
one of the library’s. The club will meet the first and third Thursdays of every month. Grades 6-12. Online registration is

Research 2.0, Thursday, March 5, 6:30 pm, second floor Computer Center: A class for kids in grades K-4 and their

Get Hooked: Knitting and Crochet Club, Thursday, March 5, 7:00 pm, second floor Teen Area: Join us for the
ongoing Knitting and Crochet Club. We have crochet hooks, knitting needles, yarn and the know-how to teach the basics
of crocheting. Or, bring your own project. Refreshments will be served. Open to ages 10 and up.
Artist’s Reception for Smoke 'em if you got 'em by Jason Asselin, Thursday, March 5, 7:00 pm: The artist attempts
to turn discarded cigarette packs into an art form that carries a subtle message about the nefarious practices of the
cigarette industry. The drawings in this show are a commentary on addiction and the evidence of that habit, our
disposable culture and acceptance of the resulting street trash. On view in the Gallery from March 3-30. The public is
welcome to attend this opening reception.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Movie Screening, Friday, March 6, 3:00 pm: The Hunger Games saga
continues in this sequel that finds Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) faced with a decision that could sway the fate of
a nation. With the games destroyed and Peeta captured, Katniss becomes the symbol of rebellion while trying to rescue

AARP® Tax-Aide™ Foundation will have trained volunteers on hand to answer questions, regardless of income level,
related to regular (non-business) taxes. Patrons will be asked to register on arrival and will be assisted on a first come-first
served basis. Volunteers will prepare tax returns for people with moderate or low income (less than $45,000 if single and less
than $60,000 if filing a joint return.) Please bring your copy of last year's (2013) federal and state tax returns plus all
relevant 2014 tax documents you received such as W-2 wage statement, 1099 interest statement, health insurance
coverage etc. The new 2014 tax returns will be eFiled for free.
Family Yoga, Saturday, March 7, 1:00 pm: Our Family Yoga Class emphasizes interactive and partner poses and
games for kids and adults to do together. Designed for children ages 3-12 and their caregiver(s). No yoga experience

The Sounds and Stories of Celtic Music, Sunday, March 8, 2:00 pm: Jeff Snow is a talented multi-instrumentalist who
shares the music, and the stories behind the music, of Scotland, Ireland and England. Each concert is different and is
adapted to the responses and interest of the audience. Jeff usually performs on the guitar, autoharp and bouzouki.
The Good Lie Movie Screening, Monday, March 9, 6:30 pm: They were known simply as 'The Lost Boys.' Orphaned by
the brutal civil war in Sudan that began in 1983, these young victims traveled as many as a thousand miles on foot in
search of safety. Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort would bring 3,600 lost boys and girls to America. Runtime 110

Poetry Series, Tuesday, March 10, 7:00 pm: Jason Tandon, Dan Chiasson and Maggie Dietz will give readings as part

Living with Coyotes, Tuesday, March 17, 7:00 pm: John Maguranis of Project Coyote Massachusetts will speak. His
organization works to change negative attitudes towards native carnivores by replacing ignorance and fear with
understanding, respect and appreciation. They advocate compassionate conservation and coexistence between people
and wildlife. The program is cosponsored Newton Conservators.

Starlight Detectives: How Astronomers, Inventors and Eccentrics Discovered the Modern Universe , Wednesday,
March 18, 7:00 pm: Join author Alan Hirshfeld to learn about the wondrous tale of cosmic exploration and the colorful
characters that ushered astronomy into the modern age. The talk will be followed by a book signing with books provided
by New England Mobile Book Fair.

The Theory of Everything Movie Screening, Thursday, March 19, 6:30 pm: James Marsh's biopic of the celebrated
scientist Stephen Hawking, The Theory of Everything, stars Eddie Redmayne. Hawking falls deeply in love with fellow
Cambridge student Jane Wilde. After receiving an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age, Stephen embarks on his
most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of - time. Runtime 123 min. PG-13. Enjoy

Scratch Club, Thursday, March 19, 6:30 pm, second floor Computer Center: Kids in grades 3-6 come for an hour to
explore and work with Scratch (a free programming language designed at MIT) to create games, animation and stories.

Historic Nonantum, a Village of Traditions,Thursday, March 26, 7:00 pm: Join Nonantum residents Terry Sauro, Lois
Dominique and Alderman Alison Leary as they present an overview of their village’s historic sites, traditions and notable
persons. They will explore the cultural events and traditions that make Nonantum unique among Newton’s 13 villages.
Learn about the Saint Mary of Carmen Festival, the Coletti-Magni Park holiday lighting and the notable shops that run
along the Village Center. The program, part of the Newton History Series, is cosponsored by Historic Newton.

Paper Mittens Craft, Saturday, March 28, 2:00 pm: Join the Newton Free Library and the New Art Center for a crafty
afternoon for ages 6-10, using lots of cool art supplies to create your own unique mittens or gloves that will warm up your

Paul Speidel Performs, Sunday, March 29, 2:00 pm: Join jazz/blues guitarist Paul Speidel and Steve Conahan,
acoustic bass, when they will bring their interpretations of the traditional styles to the stage in the guitar-bass duo format.
Jazz and blues are simultaneously old and new styles of music. Every time a new generation discovers the language,
styles, musical forms and rhythms of old; they add their voice to the chorus of those that preceded them.
Watercolor, Monotype, Oil: Three Ways of Seeing, Three Ways of Thinking, Tuesday, March 31, 7:00 pm: Artist
Joel Janowitz will present his work in watercolor, monotype and oil painting and discuss their strengths relative to each
other. He will talk about why he chooses to work in one medium or another and how each stimulates his approach to the
others. Lastly he will discuss how this shifting and alternating between media contributes to the character of the work
and informs his path as an artist. The program is cosponsored by the Newton Art Association.

Main Hall Art Show, Newton Camera Club Annual Print Show: The joy of photography is what brings together
members of the Newton Camera Club. Their annual library show highlights some of the best work produced by club
members, with a variety of photographic subjects and approaches. The show will be on view from March 3-30.
Atrium Case 1: Preview of the library's annual Spring Fling fundraiser which will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 6:30
pm. Come mix & mingle with authors Atul Gawande (Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End) and Barney
Frank (Frank: Life in Politics from the Great Society to Same-Sex Marriage), enjoy fine food & drink, live jazz music

Atrium Case 2: Stop by the atrium case this month to see historic images of Nonantum, a village with rich traditions and a
diverse history. Come on March 26 at 7:00 pm to hear Nonantum residents Terry Sauro, Lois Dominique and Alderman

Three Main Hall Cases: The New Art Center will be exhibiting a selection of ceramics work by advanced adult students.

Teen Gallery and second floor display cases: Posters and Ceramics from Newton North High School. On view
