What is a migraine?
A migraine is a type of headache that may begin as a dull ache and progress into a constant
throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. You may be sensitive to light, sound, and smell as
well as feeling nauseated or you may vomit. Patients with chronic migraines, experience them 15 or
more days out of a month usually lasting four or more hours
What is Botox?
Botox© (onabotulinumatoxinA) is a type of medicine that is
used to treat a variety of conditions.
What is the purpose of the Botox for migraines?
For chronic migraines, it is used a preventative medicine,
meaning it is given to patients to prevent migraines.
What are the risks and complications of the procedure?
The most common complication is neck pain. Others include
headache, migraine, slight or partial facial paralysis, eyelid
drooping, bronchitis, muscle stiffness, loss of strength and
muscle weakness all over the body, pain in one or more
muscles, muscle spasms, injection site pain, and high blood
pressure.
What to expect during the procedure:
Botox© is injected into the affected muscles. For chronic migraine patients, Botox© treatment is
injected by your doctor into 7 areas of the head and neck muscles, with a total of 31 injections. The
needles used are very fine, but you may experience some pain, swelling and other reactions at the
site.
How often will I need to be treated?
The recommended retreatment schedule is every 12 weeks. However, your doctor may decide not
repeat the treatment if you have any serious allergic reactions or other side effects.
Will I have any restrictions on the day of the procedure?
You may continue with your normal activities once your procedure is done, however you will want
to avoid any strenuous activities for the next 24 hours.
