Both courses offered in this module constitute continuation of courses in modules 4c and 13c. Course objectives Practical application of translation theories 1 The aim of this course is to familiarize students with basic theoretical concepts in the field of Translation Studies, including basic concepts, strategies and tools used in translation. The emphasis is put on searching for different types of equivalence (formal, textual, pragmatic; on word, phrase, sentence or text level) and on using translation techniques adequate for particular tasks. Also, the methods of translation of various txt types and genres are discussed in greater detail. Specialist translation The aim of this course is to teach students basic skills necessary in the specialist translator’s work. The course deals with basic problems of specialist translation, including specificity of translation of different text types and genres, specialist terminology and equivalence in translation of specialist texts. Practical exercises and discussions of translations will help students develop their professional skills in terms of preparation of specialist translations.
