Who is the Green Knight?
In “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” an outrageous challenge is issued by the Green Knight, a
mysterious being. For centuries scholars have debated over the nature of this character, is he human
or is he something more mythical? Some scholars believe the Green Knight is a god sent to test
Arthur and his friends, the Knights of the Round Table. Others believe he is a demon rather than a
god, who decides to tempt Gawain into betraying his ideals, these ideals can be seen in the Code of
Chivalry all knights follow. Still others claim the Green Knight is a judge, due to the themes embodied
in the tale this seems quite likely. Arthur, Gawain and the court are all tested with the Knight presiding
over them as a judge of courtly honor. There are also those who believe the Green Knight is simply a
Giant, a mythical being common to Arthurian tales. As in Beowulf Giants possessed magical powers,
such powers are meant to be used for both good and evil purposes. If the Green Knight is simply a
Giant, then thematic ideas can be somewhat subjective. So, who is the Green Knight, is he really
Green? Is he a metaphor? Is the tale meant to be entertaining or does it serve a higher purpose? It is
up to the reader, you, to decide.
