NZQA registered unit standard 20306 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe the biology of a species of aquatic Crustacea Level 3 Credits 5 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe a selected crustacean species and its natural habitat; locate and identify anatomical features; describe the feeding, reproduction and life cycle; describe factors that impact on the growth; and describe abnormal features and/or behaviours that could indicate potential health issues for the selected crustacean species. Classification Seafood > Aquaculture Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Crustacean species refers to any aquatic species with an exoskeleton; examples include but are not limited to, rock lobster, paddle crab, freshwater crayfish (koura), prawn. 2 Candidates must select a crustacean species and provide evidence for the same species for each outcome. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe a selected crustacean species and its natural habitat. Evidence requirements 1.1 The description includes the name of the species. Range 1.2 The description includes the distinguishing features of the species in terms of appearance. Range 1.3 common, scientific; may include Māori name where appropriate. includes but is not limited to – colour, size, shape. The description includes the habitat and distribution of the species in New Zealand. Evidence requirements 2.1 The external anatomical features are located and named. Range 2.2 carapace, reproductive organs. The internal anatomical features are located and named. Range gills, feeding track, gut, anal track. Outcome 3 Describe the feeding, reproduction and life cycle of the selected crustacean species. Evidence requirements 3.1 The description outlines the feeding method and food sources of the selected species. 3.2 The description outlines the stages of the reproductive cycle of the selected species. Range 3.3 may include but is not limited to – embryo development, triggers for spawning. The description outlines the stages of life cycle of the selected species. Outcome 4 Describe factors that impact on the growth of the selected crustacean species. Range may include but is not limited to – water temperature, water quality, weather patterns, food availability, habitat, species age, stress; evidence is required for four factors. Evidence requirements 4.1 The description identifies factors that can affect the growth of the selected species. 4.2 The description includes the impact of each factor on the growth of the selected species. Outcome 5 Describe abnormal features and/or behaviours that could indicate potential health issues with the selected crustacean species. Primary Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 20306 version 3 Page 3 of 3 Evidence requirements 5.1 The description outlines abnormal features and/or behaviours that could indicate a potential health issue with the selected species. Range 5.2 five abnormal features and/or behaviours. The description includes the action to take if abnormal features and/or behaviours are identified and the reasons why this action is important. Range two reasons.
