Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen 2007
&
Miss Atlanta Teenager 2007
Pageant
October 21, 2006
The Miss Atlanta Scholarship Program will be holding the Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen and the
Miss Atlanta Teenager 2007 pageant on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center in
Roswell, Georgia. The Miss Atlanta Scholarship Program is affiliated with the Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen,
Miss Georgia and Miss America programs.
The winner of the Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen 2007 title will go on to represent Atlanta in the 2007 Miss
Georgia’s Outstanding Teen pageant. The winner of the state pageant will go on to represent Georgia at the Miss
America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando FL in August of 2007. This is a little sister program to Miss
America and the national winner will make appearances with Miss America and on behalf of the Miss America
Program.
We will, also, be naming a winner of the Miss Atlanta Teenager title. This young woman will make
appearances and be a part of our Miss Atlanta family. She will compete only in Casual Wear, On-Stage Question
and Evening gown. This title does not advance to the state level. She may continue to compete in any pageant
system she wishes to. Both titles are a great way to make friends, get pageant experience and get to represent
Atlanta as a titleholder.
Requirements for all contestants:
1.a.
Miss Atlanta Teenager must be within the ages of 13-18 and in middle or high school on
the day of the pageant to participate.
1.b.
Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen: in order to be eligible to compete, a contestant must (1)
have been at least thirteen (13) years of age at the time of her first appearance in the
preliminary round of the local or state competition that she is entering in anticipation of this
year’s National Finals, and (2) be no older than seventeen (17) years of age and rising to no
more than her senior year on the date she would compete in the National Finals in August
2007. (These are state rules.)
2.
Must have been a Georgia resident for 6 months prior to the local pageant.
3.
Must have never been married or pregnant, and must be of good moral standing in her
community.
4.
Must agree to participate in the scheduled rehearsals and the entire pageant and, if
competing for Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen, must agree to prepare for and participate in
the Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in June 2007.
ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY SEPTEMBER 30, 2006 AND MUST BE RECEIVED BY OCTOBER 3,
2006.
Pageant Information:
Contestants for the title of:
Miss Atlanta Teenager will compete in Casual wear, Onstage Question, and Evening Wear
Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen will compete in Interview, Casual wear, Evening Wear, Onstage Question and
Talent.
Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen contestants will compete in a private 5-minute interview the morning of the pageant and
in Casual Wear, Evening Wear, Onstage Question, and Talent during the actual pageant that afternoon.
Miss Atlanta Teenager contestants will compete in Casual Wear, Evening Wear, and Onstage Question during the actual
pageant that afternoon
Contestants will be numbered with Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen contestants first, followed by Miss Atlanta Teenager
contestants. They will have the same panel of judges, but will be scored on different score sheets.
At the conclusion of the pageant, a winner and two runners up will be named for each title. Contestants will be competing
for one title only and will not compete against the other title’s contestants.
Interview - 35% (Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen Contestants only)
This will be a private panel interview with Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen contestants. Judges will ask the contestant
questions based on her fact sheet, general questions about her and issues of interest to teens. The interview will be 5
minutes. The interview will begin with the contestant’s introduction of no more than 30 seconds on the topic of her choice.
(See FAQ section for ideas.) Contestants in the Teen program are required to have a community service platform at the
state level and should have an idea of what platform they would like to promote during their year of service. Contestants
should wear business attire (Suit, dress or pantsuit) with traditional shoes.
Talent - 35% (Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen contestants ONLY)
Contestants for Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen will perform a talent of her choice, which must not exceed 2 minutes.
Previous talent selections have included vocal, dance, piano or other instrument, baton, monologue and other
performances. Your talent attire must be in good taste, age-appropriate and compliment your talent selection. Musical
accompaniment must be on a CD, with only the contestant’s two-minute selection on the CD.
Evening Wear - 15% (Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen)
45% (Miss Atlanta Teenager)
Contestants in both the Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen and Miss Atlanta Teenager will compete in evening gown. Each
contestant will model an evening gown of her choice, with the gown expected to be in good taste and age appropriate
Casual Wear- 10% & On-stage Question- 5% (Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen)
45% & On-stage Question- 10% (Miss Atlanta Teenager)
Contestants in both the Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen and Miss Atlanta Teenager will compete in Casual Wear. After
each contestant has answered an on-stage question, she will proceed to modeling her casual wear. Contestants will wear
jeans and top and shoes of their choice. This should be a flattering and age appropriate outfit that reflects your personal
style. You may wear more than one top- as in a top with a jacket or sweater over it. Again, a contestant’s casual wear is
expected to be in good taste and age-appropriate.
Reminder: You do not have to be from the Atlanta area to compete. All Georgia
teens welcome!
All contestants are competing for the Miss Atlanta Teenager title; you may hold this title and hold another pageant title
from another system (such as Teen All-American, Junior Miss, America’s National Teenager, etc.). ****
**** One exception to this rule: The Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen system does not permit current titleholders who will
be competing in the Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen pageant in Columbus, Georgia in June 2007 to compete in other
Miss America local teen pageants, even for a title not leading to the State pageant.
Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen has an important job to do in preparing for the State pageant. She may currently hold
any system title, but after our title can only compete in "for fun"-type pageants or high school pageants until the State
pageant is complete.
Both Miss Atlanta Teenager and Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen will serve as “ambassadors” at civic, social and community
events. You will be attending pageants as visiting royalty with the Miss Atlanta Board and will return to our stage to crown
your successor in the fall of 2007.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the fact sheets have to be typed/recreated on the computer? - You are
applying for the job of “Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen” and job applications are almost
always typed. Also, this is the first impression you will make on the judges. They will have
reviewed the fact sheets before meeting you. A neatly typed fact sheet with correct
grammar, spelling and punctuation makes a great first impression. It says you are a person
willing to take the time to get it right - whatever the job!
For those competing in Miss Atlanta Teenager, the resume will be used to tell the audience
a little bit more about you during the competition.
What kind of information should I include on my resume? - Two of the biggest
mistakes contestants make are including too much information and including old
information. As a general rule, fact sheets should be current to the last 2-3 years or the
high school years, if applicable. When a 17 year-old contestant includes her 3rd grade
spelling bee award, it makes me think “Haven’t you done anything LATELY?” The only
exception would be if you sang on Broadway as a child actor or something along those
lines. Your fact sheet should include enough information to be interesting and show your
attributes, but not so cluttered that the judges get lost. If you include those things you most
want to talk about and leave off extraneous information, you can get the judges asking the
questions you WANT to answer. (*Tip - write your fact sheet in the first person, not third
person (e.g., I hope to…, not “Angela hopes to…”)
Do I need expensive clothes to compete successfully? - A huge NO on this one! I tell
the judges repeatedly that clothes don’t count. We can always borrow or buy something
new before the State pageant. They are looking for potential - Does the contestant have
the intelligence, talent and personality to compete at the State level given 8 months of
preparation? Clothes are changeable - intelligence is much harder to change! The only
time clothes matter is if they are inappropriate. But that is a judgment problem, not a
clothes problem.
For those competing in Miss Atlanta Teenager, the score for casual wear counts much
more. But your outfit should still not have to be expensive. We are looking for a teen with
age appropriate style and a sense of confidence on stage. Do not go to a lot of expensewear your favorite jeans with top and accessories you would wear out with friends on the
weekend. The judges are looking at YOU and your presentation, not the labels on your
clothes.
What are the judges looking for in talent? – As a judge, I would rather see a contestant
perform a simple talent well than the most elaborate talent badly. In other words, I would
score a contestant higher for a graceful ballet routine in which she performed all of the
elements well than for a flashy routine with half-done grand jetes and difficult but sloppy
footwork! DO WHAT YOU DO BEST! As a judge, I also love it when a contestant moves
away from an “overdone” pageant song and tries something new. That doesn’t mean
“Orange-Colored Sky” can’t win with me; it just means I have seen over 15 versions of that
song in my pageant/judging career and you will have more to overcome in impressing me
with it! The judges are told to look at the contestant’s POTENTIAL. For instance, does she
have a good vocal base to start from that could create a winning talent with some stagepresence help? They will be trying to assess what you have to work with in preparing for
the State pageant. Remember, all music CD’s must end at the 2-minute mark; we cannot
cut the music for you.
Will my mom be able to help me in the dressing room during the show? – We hold to
the same rules as the State pageant - NO parents allowed in the dressing rooms at any
time. There will be hostesses in the dressing room to help with zippers, pulling hair back
for talent, confidence boosting. These women have lots of experience in the pageant world
and will know what to do! You will have time between interviews and the on-stage show to
change your hair if you want. (A note on hairstyles - this system favors a fresh, teenagelooking teen. Simple, pretty, shiny hair works best!)
Can a new girl win? – Yes, she can. We have had 8 winners in the history of our pageant.
Four winners came with lots of experience and four came with almost none. Former titles
hold very little weight. It’s all in what the judges see in you on the day of competition.
How are contestant numbers determined? – With us, the early bird gets the worm! We
keep track of each entry and the day it was postmarked/received. Then we reverse the
order so that the last contestant to turn in their entry fee and paperwork gets to be
contestant #1. The earliest contestant gets to go last. Most contestants don’t want to go
first and they know they control their own destiny (and contestant number!) We do make
concessions for contestants who will compete only for the title of Miss Atlanta Teenager.
Those contestants will typically go last in the contestant order ONLY because they will not
have a talent number to prepare for, but are still in “last entry in goes first” among those
competing only for Miss Atlanta Teenager.
I need more time to get stuff in. Can I have extra time? - One of the hallmarks of a winner is
seeing what needs to be done and doing it when it needs to be done. Deadlines are for a reason. In
the past, due to late items we have had to scramble to put the show music, judge books, etc.
together causing endless headaches for the directors and production staff. This was also unfair to
those who worked diligently to get their items in by the deadline. We cannot make exceptions. As a
reigning queen, you will be facing lots of deadlines in preparing for the State pageant. You will be
expected to be on time and meet all of your deadlines. So start now and show us the winner in you
before you are even chosen! .
What should I say in my introduction for interview? - You will have 30 seconds, which
is just enough time for 3-5 sentences. You may talk about your family, a hobby that
interests you, your favorite motto, your community service, or any topic that you think will
start off a dynamic and interesting interview. Just be yourself! (FYI- you will not be allowed
to bring any items into interview with you.)
What if I have questions not answered in this packet? – We at Miss Atlanta LOVE our
teen program!!! We are always glad to help you in any way we can. You can always reach
us by phone or e-mail. Any board member will be glad to offer assistance.
