TODAY’S GOSPEL READING
Matthew 4:1-11
1
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted
by the devil. 2He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he
was famished. 3The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son
of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But he
answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone but by
every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5
Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the
pinnacle of the temple, 6saying to him, “If you are the Son of God,
throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels
concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that
you will not dash your foot against a stone.’”
7
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God
to the test.’”
8
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all
the kingdoms of the world and their splendour; 9and he said to him,
“All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
10
Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘Worship
the Lord your God, and serve only him.’”
11
Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on
him.

Prayer of Opening
(Matthew 4)
Faithful Traveler,
walk with us
as we journey with Christ
through the season of Lent;
abide with us and strengthen us
as we face the many temptations
that befall us each and every day.
Save us from the time of trial,
and send your angels to strengthen us
when we consider taking the easy way out.
Be our God, and we will be your people –
a people raised to newness of life
through the gift of your Spirit
and the love of your Son. Amen.

Prayer of Confession
(Matthew 4)
Holy One, we do not always face temptation well.
We heed to rumblings of our stomachs
and settle for loaves of bread
when we are starving for the words of life
that come from your mouth, O God.
We put you to the test,
seeking signs of your favour before others
when we should “be still”
and know that you are God.
We place our trust in deceitful leaders
who promise us a better and easier life
when we should be putting our faith
in you alone.
Forgive us, O God.
In the desert experiences of our lives,
help us find ways to resist temptation,
that we might be found worthy of your calling,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(time for silent confession)
Words of Forgiveness
(Psalm32, Romans 5)
When we acknowledge our failings before God,
God forgives our sin and wipes away our shame.
Receive forgiveness and mercy
Through the free gift of God’s grace in Christ.
Thanks be to God! Amen.

Offertory prayer
(Matthew 4)
Holy One of Israel,
as we provide loaves of bread for those who hunger,
may we be living bread as well,
that our offerings may feed the spirit
as well as the body;
as we seek to bring justice to our world,
may we embody faith in your righteous love,
that the world may know
the source of their hope. Amen.
VU#112 – O God, How We Have Wandered
Blessing and Sending Forth
Though life is full of temptation, God will see us through.
We will rejoice in the One who strengthens us.
Though life is full of times of trial,
Christ walks with us every step of the way.
We rejoice in the One who shares our journey.
Though life is full of obstacles to faith,
the Spirit eases our burden.
We rejoice in the One who leads us home.
Go with God.

IT’S NEW E-mail Money Transfer from your Online Banking.
We wish to let everyone know that we now have another option for you
to make a donation to the Church by way of an Email Money Transfer
from your online banking. We have set up a special email that will
only be used for this purpose and the email address is
stjamesdonations@gmail.com We have set up this new email as an
easy way for making your donations to the Church. All you need to do
is email transfer your money using your online banking and then send
Mary Wheelan an email to the Church office to tell her the answer to
your security question. Her email address is stjames@nb.aibn.com.
After she receives your email with the answer to the security question
she will be able to receive your email money transfer and you will
receive a confirmation by email from your bank that the Church has
received your money. This is a very easy way to make a donation to
the Church whenever you wish in any amount you want to make it.
This means that you can do this in the summer time when you are
away or if there is a snow storm and you can’t get to Church or
anytime at all, it’s a very flexible way to give to your Church. We will
continue to offer the PAR option to those who wish to make a monthly
donation to the Church and this option is set up to take place on the
20TH of each month. Feel free to contact Mary at the Church office if
this option would fit your needs better. We are trying to make it easier
and more convenient for everyone to be able to support their Church.
Feel free to contact Mary at the Church office if you having any
questions about either of these options. She can be reached by phone
328-6114 or by email stjames@nb.aibn.com

THESE SHOES ARE MADE FOR WALKING
Our Sunday School will be collecting donations during the
Lenten season to purchase New Shoes for those living on the street and
battling poverty. For these people comfortable and serviceable
footwear is rare.
Ottawa Centre 507 is a drop-facility at Centretown United
Church that walks the walk with homeless individuals struggling with
addictions, mental illness, and loneliness. One service of this outreach
ministry is to provide new footwear for comfort, safety, and a sense of
pride.
Our gift of $ 30.00 will supply a needed pair of shoes for the
Centre 507 participant.
