For it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him. Save us from the time of trial, and send your angels to strengthen us when we consider taking the easy way out. Be our God, and we will be your people – a people raised to newness of life through the gift of your Spirit and the love of your Son. Amen. (From The Abingdon Worship Annual 2014 Edition. We heed to rumblings of our stomachs and settle for loaves of bread when we are starving for the words of life that come from your mouth, O God. We put you to the test, seeking signs of your favour before others when we should “be still” and know that you are God. We place our trust in deceitful leaders who promise us a better and easier life when we should be putting our faith in you alone. Forgive us, O God. In the desert experiences of our lives, help us find ways to resist temptation, that we might be found worthy of your calling, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (time for silent confession) Words of Forgiveness (Psalm32, Romans 5) When we acknowledge our failings before God, God forgives our sin and wipes away our shame. Receive forgiveness and mercy Through the free gift of God’s grace in Christ. Thanks be to God! Amen. (From The Abingdon Worship Annual 2014 Edition. Copyright © 2013 by Abingdon Press. (see insert) Announcements Pastoral Prayer & Lord’s Prayer Closing Hymn Anthem Scripture Offertory prayer (Matthew 4) Holy One of Israel, as we provide loaves of bread for those who hunger, may we be living bread as well, that our offerings may feed the spirit as well as the body; as we seek to bring justice to our world, may we embody faith in your righteous love, that the world may know the source of their hope. Amen. VU#112 – O God, How We Have Wandered Blessing and Sending Forth Though life is full of temptation, God will see us through. We will rejoice in the One who strengthens us. Though life is full of times of trial, Christ walks with us every step of the way. We rejoice in the One who shares our journey. Though life is full of obstacles to faith, the Spirit eases our burden. We rejoice in the One who leads us home. Go with God. (From The Abingdon Worship Annual 2014 Edition.
