The Mathematics Department - Havering Sixth Form College

JOB DESCRIPTION – Teacher of Mathematics
Mathematics, Science and Technology Faculty
We are keen to appoint an energetic and enthusiastic person to join the Mathematics
team. Some members of the department have specific Course Leader responsibilities.
There is a facilitator for Level 1 and 2 courses.
We are looking to appoint staff to fit in with an enthusiastic, well organised, and
hardworking team. They see team work and commitment to professional development
as priorities. Individual teachers use a variety of teaching styles and techniques to
promote interest in and enjoyment of Mathematics and to enable students to fulfil their
potential. Many students go on to study Mathematics or a Mathematics-related
degree at University.
The Faculty offers AS and A2 Mathematics, Further Mathematics, GCSE and Level 1 and
Level 2 Functional Mathematics.
The Faculty also offers BTECs in Science and Engineering which both have mathematics
units, and A-level Physics (OCR syllabus). Experience of teaching on BTEC courses and
A-Level Physics would be desirable but not essential.
The AS and A2 students follow the AQA Specification. AS students can choose either
Mechanics 1 or Decision 1 for their applications module. At A2 they have a choice of
Mechanics 2, Decision 2 or Statistics1. Students also have the opportunity to pick up AS
Further Mathematics in the second year.
GCSE re-sit students follow the AQA Modular course. Students with less than a grade D
at GCSE take the Edexcel Functional Mathematics.
The College is seeking to appoint a graduate Mathematician with a teaching
qualification. For applicants with a good degree it is not essential to have taught A
level before, though that is clearly an advantage. Candidates should have
demonstrated good classroom practice and be up-to-date with new initiatives. The
College would be very happy to appoint a newly qualified teacher.
