MT. COMFORT CEMETERY
Mt. Comfort is the largest cemetery in Natchez Trace State Park and Forest. It is
located on Maple Lake Road approximately six miles north of I-40 and is well maintained
and very active. The exact number of unmarked graves is impossible to estimate, especially
as fieldstones marking graves have been removed. However, the large relatively open are
near the center of the cemetery probably is full of burials. Unmarked graves may number in
the hundreds. Recorded April 25 and 26, 2001.
Edwin and Clella Carter recorded the cemetery circa 1974 and published the
information as part of their three-volume set on Carroll County cemeteries. Their record is
referred to as Carters in the notes below.

OAK GROVE CEMETERY
Oak Grove Cemetery is located at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church on Birdwell
Road in southeastern Carroll County, Tennessee. Natchez Trace State Forest borders the
cemetery on the north, east and south. The cemetery, which is well maintained, probably
dates to the 1840s. Like many early-mid nineteenth century cemeteries still in use, fieldstone
marking early burials have been removed. It is impossible to estimate the number of
unmarked burials. A number of grave shaft depressions are visible, especially on the north
end of the cemetery. This record was made February 8, 2002 and checked February 8, 2002.

SHILOH CEMETERY
Shiloh Cemetery is located near the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in the
southeastern corner of Carroll county. The well maintained cemetery is said to date to 1833
but does not appear that old at first glance because there are few remaining fieldstones or
original markers with nineteenth century death dates. A number of disturbed ground areas
possibly representing unmarked burials can be discerned in the eastern half of the cemetery.
This cemetery was recorded January 13, 2002 and checked January 26, 2002.
There are at least two previous records for this cemetery. As of February 2002, a mid1990s record of the cemetery made by Larry R. Pritchard was available on the web at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~tncarrol/cemetery/shilcem.htm. The earlier record was compared
to this 2002 survey and is referred to as Pritchard in the notes below.

TODD CEMETERY
This small family cemetery is located just outside the park boundary. Turn on west of
the gravel road just north of I-40 interchange. Drive about a mile and the access road joins
the gravel road on the left at an acute angle. If you reach Rainey Cemetery you have gone too
far. There is a locked gate at the beginning of the private property. The cemetery is located
between two large cedar trees about 100 yards beyond the gate. Blocks mark four additional
probable grave sites. This cemetery was recorded December 29, 1999.

ALTOM CEMETERY
Altom Cemetery now has 66 concrete blocks marking graves. There are no carved
markers with information.
Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (R. H. Harris, Memphis, 1976),
Vol. III, p. 705, notes the following:
ALTOM CEMETERY
Sixth District
Researched by: Cova Lewis
Location: About 1½ miles south of Natchez Trace store near the forks of
Brown's Creek Lake.
The Maness school house was built directly over several graves in the 1920's.
It is believed that the graves are Altom's.
Commentary: Most likely this cemetery never had carved markers. It probably is very old
and contained only fieldstones. In appearance in probably was something like the Gibson
Cemetery six miles east in Decatur County, one of the few cemeteries which retains an earlymid 19th century appearance. For a school to have been built over several graves in the
Altom Cemetery would seem to indicate that the cemetery had been out of use for many
years by the 1920s.

BIBLE GROVE CEMETERY
This is a medium size cemetery located on Bible Grove Church Road north of
Chesterfield and just south of Natchez Trace State Park. This record was made in December
1993. Checked and updated January 13-14, 2002.
Janice S. Wood made an earlier record of this cemetery circa 1974. Her record
appears in Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions (Memphis, R. H. Harris,
1976), Vol. III, pp. 587-593. This earlier work is referred to as "Wood" in the notes below.
Unfortunately, the information provided by Ms. Wood was mostly abbreviated to name, birth
year, and death year only. Janice Wood noted "At least 60 unmarked graves."

Hugh L. Smal
August 8, 1952
Lexington Progress
Forum, The Progress Editor
You recall when I visited to your office about June 15 and subscribed for your paper.
I am a native of Henderson County, although I have been living away for many years and
living here in Fort Worth. I believe the persons who have relatives buried in the Natchez
Trace Park will appreciate the matter about which I am writing and hope you may give it
proper attention in your paper so they may be advised and perhaps be offered assistance to
the state.
There are many old cemeteries in that area where pioneers are buried, among which is
the old Lovell Cemetery where my grandfather, Billie Lovell, and most of his family are
buried, and two or three others, being some 12 graves in all. This spot is in the park some
three miles east of where the South boundary of the park crosses Brown's Creek. The Lovell
family has long since left that country and this old cemetery has been neglected for many
years, nobody there interested to look after it. Result: it is almost obliterated, grown up in
rubbish and can only be identified by cedar trees around the spot planted there nearly 70
years ago. Prior to the construction of that great park, we had placed markers there but
hunters and others destroyed them.
Upon my return from back there a few weeks ago, knowing there are other cemeteries
in the area, and all practically abandoned and neglected, I wrote to Governor Gordon
Browning explaining this situation and suggested that the state take over and care for all of
them now since nobody is allowed to trespass in that area, and unless it did, all cemeteries
within that area would soon be lost and forgotten.
Governor Browning agreed with me in the plan and advised me that he had referred
the matter to the Department of Conservation. This Department through Mr. Buford McRae,
Executive assistant, then advised me that he in turn had referred my plan to Mr. Carl I.
Peterson, state forester in charge of the Division of Forestry, having charge of the Forest and
Park. Mr. Peterson approved the plan and immediately advised me that he had issued
instructions to the Forest Ranger in charge, Mr. Earl Braden of Lexington, Superintendent of
the Park to proceed with the straightening of all markers in the cemeteries, and to clean off
and maintain all cemeteries within the area so that they will at all times be preserved and
maintained in an orderly and presentable manner. We think this is the sensible, respectable
and humane thing to do; that in the future they mow the grass and keep them so they will
have a neat and cared for appearance.
In view of the humane act of these officials so promptly rendered upon having their
attention called to the matter, I, for one, and I am sure hundreds of others, desire to publicly

MAZIES CHAPEL CEMETERY
This cemetery is located at Mazies Chapel Baptist Church northeast of Lexington and
just outside the boundary of Natchez Trace State Park. The cemetery was established in the
1920s.
The cemetery has fallen victim to a fad for grave decoration. Many graves are
decorated with labor-intensive, hard-to-maintain raised beds, raised borders, and decorative
garden gravel or white sand covers. Sadly, many graves without permanent markers are
highly decorated.
David Donahue recorded this cemetery April 17, 1998 and checked and updated it
