Into the Wild Assignments
For each section of reading, you’ll be tracking quotes from the text. You’ll need to find instances of Krakauer’s
descriptions of the main character (Alex/Chris McCandless). These should be in Krakauer’s voice, not in the voice of
people who knew Chris.
Find two quotes (two different devices) per section, and for each quote, you’ll need to do two things.
1. Identify the stylistic device Krakauer is using in the quote to describe Chris (detail, diction, syntax, imagery, and
figurative language).
2. Fully discuss what this description indicates about how Krakauer feels (tone) about Chris at this point in the book.
The quotes will be due at the beginning of class and will not be accepted late.
