KENT COLLEGE BIOLOGY/GENERAL SCIENCE LABORATORY TECHNICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION 1. Laboratory Servicing Taking note of practical requirements. Preparation of apparatus, chemical solutions (including standardisation when necessary) for practical work and demonstrations; ensuring that all the chemicals and equipment required are placed/laid out in the laboratory before the start of each lesson, and that any demonstrations are set up as directed. Clearing of apparatus from the laboratories after practical work and demonstrations; wiping down of surfaces when necessary (including cleaning of balances and microscopes); ensuring safe disposal of unwanted chemicals, broken glassware and other waste materials. Washing up of used glassware; ensuring return of chemicals, apparatus and other resources to stores; ensuring laboratory glassware/equipment is replaced as necessary and reagent bottles are topped up. Make purchase orders and check deliveries including purchasing items locally and maintaining a record of expenditure. Undertaking general maintenance of laboratory, checking that all equipment is clean and safe to use. Assist in maintaining records of equipment, chemicals and resources. Assisting with the testing of new experiments (in conjunction with teaching staff) before their use in a classroom setting if requested. Setting up of multi-media, computer and data-logging equipment when required. 2. Construction and Repair Maintaining and repairing glassware/apparatus and other laboratory equipment to required standards. Testing of new equipment (at the direction of a member of the Science teaching staff) and devising new practical work. Construction and/or modification of apparatus for use and display. 3. Health and Safety Ensuring safe storage and/or disposal of equipment, glassware, chemicals and waste materials in line with recognised procedures and appropriate risk assessments (to include labelling of chemicals used in the laboratory). Assist in the updating risk assessments as directed by science staff. Provide Hazcards when appropriate. Inspection, and (where possible) maintenance of safety equipment (at the direction of the Teachers of Science). Keeping up-to-date with health and safety requirements and with developments in practical science, possibly by attending courses and reading relevant publications. Knowing the position of first aid boxes and eye wash stations and returning them if used or moved; requesting replenishment of first aid supplies from the School Medical Centre when such items have been used or are out of date. Checking that all windows are closed, all fire extinguishers are in place and all gas taps and electrical cut-offs are turned off during the holiday. 1 4. Advisory Assisting staff with practical work and demonstrations if requested. Advising staff (and occasionally students) on suitability of equipment for experiments. 5. General and Housekeeping Ensuring general tidiness of laboratories and prep room. Answering the phone and taking messages. Checking condition of laboratory apparatus (e.g. Bunsen burners, retort stands) at the end of each term and cleaning as necessary. Cleaning of surfaces and sinks. Thorough cleaning of prep room and reorganisation of storage (as necessary) at the end of every term. Cleaning of trolleys, shelves. Full checking of chemical stock at the end of every term, noting deficiencies. Preparing bulk solutions (e.g. dilute acids) as necessary. Undertaking of other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post, as may be determined by the Heads of Science. 6. Child Protection The posts holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare or children in the school s/he must report any concerns to the Head of Science or to the school’s child protection officer as appropriate. Other Information Working Hours Normally 30 hours per week to include four days 8.30am to 3.00pm and one day 8.30 to 12.30 during term time. However, may be required to work up to two Saturday mornings per term. Remuneration Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience which currently equates to £10,798.92. There is a 6 month probationary period. Holiday All school holidays, but will be expected to work up to 1 day after the beginning and before the end of each main school holiday period at Christmas, Easter and Summer, as required.
